Among the content we’ll providing periodically until the start of the season is a look at 20 candidates for the Prep Hoops Colorado Player of the Year Award. Our inaugural award last season went to Overland’s De’Ron Davis.
So who is today’s candidate?
Jaizec Lottie
We saw it time and time again this past grassroots season, whether during tournaments in Colorado during the spring or catching live feeds of his games on the Adidas Gauntlet circuit. Opponents thought they’d have Jaizec Lottie cornered.
Then the talented 6-0 point guard would simply zip by.
Lottie is a creator, a true point guard who has commanded Division I attention because of his mastery with the ball in his hands. Coming off a season in which he averaged 16.3 points and 5.8 assists per game while shooting 47 percent from the field and 35 percent from 3-point range, Lottie proved himself as a playmaker who could make defenses pay in multiple ways.
This season, all eyes will be on Lottie as he aims to take a Cherokee Trail team that made the Great Eight last season another step further. Yes, the loss of David Thornton, a 6-5 wing/small forward who was one of the state’s most productive players last season, will hurt the Cougars.
But with the way we saw Lottie finish the grassroots season, breaking down team defenses that featured some of the most sought-after prospects in the country, there’s little doubt he is ready to take on an even greater role, in whatever capacity his team needs.
Do that and Lottie will find himself in the thick of the player of the year conversation.
