The 5-foot-7, 140-pound point guard was quickly inserted into the starting lineup at Greeley West, a veteran team that was in contention for the Class 5A Front Range League title throughout the season.
It was a big, early responsibility, but it was one for which the young guard was well prepared.
“I think it just comes from my family,” Sepeda said. “We don’t get overwhelmed because we always stick together.”
With his family and a group of experienced and strong leaders behind him, Connor Thompson and Cordell Gillingham among them, Sepeda met the challenge, averaging 7.4 points and 2.4 assists per game and providing steady, consistency at the point guard spot.
Sepeda’s coach, Brett Cloepfil, marveled at the way his young point guard handled himself during an impressive freshman season.
“Andre’s confidence at his age is one of his strengths,” Cloepfil said. “He’s mentally tough and has a knack for playing fearless against good competition. He made a lot of big shots for us last season in important moments, which is unusual for a freshman at this level.”
Sepeda’s confidence was molded from a young age.
“Ever since I was a kid, I’ve always been one of the smallest players on the court,” he said. “I knew because of that, I had to work harder than everybody else. I take a lot of pride in not backing down from anyone.”
Sepeda increased his confidence even further this summer by playing with the Colorado Chaos for the first time. After a brief feeling-out period, Sepeda said he adjusted to his teammates and the increased level of competition.
As he grew into his role, Sepeda demonstrated much of the skill set Cloepfil raves about.
“He’s got the quickness, toughness, shooting and play-ability to be really a really good point guard,” Cloepfil said. “Right now he’s in the process of learning how to lead a team outside of just being a play-maker. We have a lot of confidence that he’s going to improve because he’s got a tremendous work ethic and wants to be special.”
If his freshman year is any indication, Sepeda has a good chance.
