While the post position in the class isn’t as deep as the backcourt, there are certainly some intriguing forwards in the 2017 group that Division II, Division III, NAIA and juco programs should be keeping an eye throughout the rest of July and into their senior high school seasons.
Let’s take a look at some of the top rising senior forwards in Colorado who could make an impact at the small-college level:
Kayden Sund, 6-6, Colorado Chaos/Golden
Sund is a versatile player who can shoot the ball well from mid-range, has a good motor and runs the floor well. He understands the angles that allow him to get to the basket, where he can finish through contact. A player who gives his all on that court at all times, Sund has a nice all-around skill set, one that is elevated by the intangibles that come with it. Sund has the ability to be an impact player at the high Division II level.
Umar Jalloh, 6-7, Colorado Hawks/Lincoln
Jalloh brings a strong motor to the floor. He’s athletic and plays with good energy around the rim, both on the defensive end and offensively, whether it’s finishing on his own or working the offensive glass. His outside shot is a work in progress but shows good promise. Intriguing because of his athleticism, he can play above the rim.
Jackson Erhlin, 6-9, The Force/Rampart
We have seen Erhlin play about half a dozen full games this summer and have been impressed with his growth each time out. He runs the floor pretty well for his size and has really worked hard to expand his perimeter game, both with his outside shot and handling the ball, something he’s even shown the ability to do in the open court. Erhlin’s stock has risen quite a bit over the past couple months, and he could be a fringe Division I prospect.
Jacob Storey, 6-7, B&B Academy/Lakewood
Storey made big strides during his junior season at Lakewood, averaging 15.6 points and 4.5 rebounds per game for a team that went 15-10. He has a nice mid-range game but also isn’t afraid to do dirty work inside. Has a solid frame and does well in transition.
Brian Read, 6-6, Colorado Titans/Fort Collins
Read is a versatile small forward whose range extends to the 3-point line. He plays well off the screen-and-roll because he has soft hands, catches the ball well and typically makes strong moves to the basket when he gets the ball. Works hard on the defensive end. He handles it pretty well, potentially well enough with more seasoning to play the three at the next level. There is a lot to like about his game.
Cameron DeHart, 6-7, Fossil Ridge
DeHart has an effective outside shot that can really stretch a defense. He has decent athleticism and he can be an effective rim protector. Working to continue building his frame, but he shows good promise as a player who can give you some good offense.
Sam Grad, 6-6, Colorado Titans/Fairview
Grad has been working hard with trainer Jerel Seamon to improve his burst and explosiveness. He has a good, lengthy frame and can be disruptive on the defensive end. Has a decent mid-range jump shot that can pull defenders away from the basket.
Peter Chopra, 6-5, Colorado Titans/Boulder
Chopra’s athleticism is often the first thing that stands out. He’s a good leaper who can finish above the rim, and he runs the floor well in transition. His skill set is still a bit raw, but he’s shown growth with his ability to hit his mid-range jump shot, as well as push the ball on the break. His athleticism defensively would give him the chance to guard multiple positions.
Alex Mickus, 6-7, Colorado Chaos/Highlands Ranch
Mickus is a sky-high academic student who also brings smarts to the court. Does a lot of the little things well and plays hard, making little come easy for opponents trying to score inside.
