The high school summer season kicked off last week and picks up full steam this weekend with the annual University of Colorado Team Camp.
The Coors Events Center will be the host for a tournament that runs Thursday through Sunday and stretches over four different venues. The camp will include mostly 5A and 4A squads, with varsity, junior varsity and freshman divisions.
On Sunday, CU will hold its elite camp, an invitation-only camp that features some of the top players in the state — and around the country.
Here’s a look at few things to watch for heading into a big basketball weekend in Boulder:
Front Range Getting Familiar
It’s no surprise that many of the teams from the Front Range League, most a short drive from the CU campus, will be in attendance this weekend. Fort Collins, Boulder, Broomfield, Monarch, Fairview and Fossil Ridge will get a nice early look at each other.
Fort Collins and Broomfield, both of which return a number of talented starters, both stood out when we watched them last weekend during the first session of the Metro State Team Camp. It’s a bit early to be prognosticating the league’s standings; it’s June, after all. But expect these teams to really go at each other when they match up.
Players to watch include Luke Wilson, the 6-1 lefty Boulder guard is growing and expanding his game, eager to do whatever it takes to help the defending league champs keep winning despite the loss of a number of talented seniors. Also, Tylor Trinh, the 5-11 2018 guard out of Monarch had a huge spring with the Colorado Chaos. It will be interesting to see him playing in a new setting, under new Monarch coach Josh Brenning.
Another Scott Takes The Court At Coors
Joel Scott had a strong summer with the talented Billups Elite 15U squad that won the Prep Hoops Spring Kick Off in April. The 6-5 2019 small forward is already physical mature, strong and versatile. He’s demonstrated an ability to guard multiple positions and really gets after it on defense.
Now, Scott is set to take the court with Lewis-Palmer, which will likely look to him to make an impact heading into his sophomore season. The Rangers will need to replace talented players like Joel’s older brother Jonathan, Sam Strasburger and Charlie Hovasse off last season’s fantastic 24-2 team.
Legend Ready To Reload
The summer will be an important time for Legend as it prepares to replace five senior starters from a Titans team that reached the Sweet 16 in last winter’s playoffs. Blake Fields, a 6-2 2017 guard, will be looked to for leadership. He had a strong spring with Denver Elite, working hard to add more offensive skills to a strong outside jumper. A pair of 6-3 2018 guards from last season’s junior-varsity squad, Caleb Tamminga and Brody McCord, could play key roles. And we’re anxious to see where Cameron Le Van, a 5-8 2020 point guard, fits into the mix after showing this spring with Colorado Premier that he’s capable of playing far bigger than his size.
Favorites
Hard to count out Sam Masten and Rock Canyon, which should also have the services of Colin Rardin and JT Bley, who missed the Jaguars run through the Metro State Team Camp while playing with the Chaos during a tournament in Oregon. Kolton Peterson-led Lakewood will also be a tough out in 5A, falling to Regis in the Metro camp last week.
