Tanner Ervin may be a small guard from a small school, but it’s hard to argue that he has big game.
Ervin, a 5-foot-10 2017 guard, helped lead Resurrection Christian to a 25-1 record and a berth in the Class 2A state title game last season, where they fell just short of a perfect season in a loss to Sanford.
Along the way, Ervin averaged 23.3 points per game, which was good for seventh in the state regardless of classification, and made a state-high 118 3-pointers at a 44 percent rate while establishing himself as one of the state’s top shooters.
“Growing up, my dad was a coach, so I was always in the gym,” Ervin said. “I haven’t had the biggest body on the court ever, so it was me knowing I might not be able to attack the room as efficiently as some of these other players who are bigger bodied, so I knew I’d be able to shoot from a good distance.”

As is easy to see in the video above, Ervin’s range knows few limits. He credits his coach at Resurrection Christian, Bruce Dick, for giving him the green light and the trust to use it. He had an eye-popping 14 games last season in which he hit five or more 3-pointers.
Now, Ervin is hopeful he can play his way to the next level.
“I absolutely want to play college basketball,” Ervin said. “I’ve had a lot of camp invites, from Campbell University, Weber State, Louisiana Tech. I was just contacted by the Mercer coach, too. And then there are some D-II schools in the RMAC … that have invited me to their elite camps they have in the summer.”
Ervin said he has a goal of reaching the Division I level, but he certainly wouldn’t balk at good opportunities at lower levels.
“College basketball is college basketball,” he said. “I’d be blessed to play at any stage.”
Ervin has spent the past spring playing spring ball with Power to Play, which will hit tournaments this summer in Anaheim and Las Vegas. In the meantime, he’ll be competing for his school in June, which will include team camps at the University of Colorado and Northern Colorado. It will be an important summer as RC prepares to move up to the 3A ranks next season.
“We’re so excited,” Ervin said of the move. “There are a lot of good 2A teams, but there were games against the some of the teams in are league where you wouldn’t get the playing time you want to because you get taken out early. It will be super fun to play more competition.”
Ervin said he is getting ready for the jump up in competition by working on becoming a more well-rounded player.
“I’ve got to get a lot stronger,” he said. “I don’t really have the body type of some of these big-time players, but once I get a lot stronger I think I’ll be able to get to the rim a lot better, and I’ll probably have a better mid-range shot. So that will be huge in the offseason.”
