After dribbling at a measured pace to the top of the circle, Egloff turned on the jets and made a quick burst toward the basket, only to put on the breaks, step back and pull up for an open jump shot. His defender had no chance.
“Right now I’m working on creating my own shot — step-backs, mid-range pull-ups, stuff like that,” Egloff said. “That’s what I’m trying to get better at. I’m just working on creating space on the step back, and I’ve put a lot of work into the gun, just shooting in the gym.”
Egloff demonstrated an intriguing offensive arsenal during this weekend’s camp, helping the Raiders grab the championship bracket title, beating Lakewood in the final game Sunday. He hit from 3, demonstrating a smooth stroke and quick release of the catch. And he showcased the mid-range game he says he has been working hard to strengthen.
It all adds to a strong grasp of ball-handling and distributing, making Egloff one of the top class of 2019 guards to watch heading into the season.
Egloff swung a little bit on varsity as a freshman and said he has been blown away by how much he has learned under veteran Regis coach Ken Shaw.
“It’s great. Every day we are learning something new,” Egloff said. “We’re learning new stuff in our offense, figuring stuff out, getting ready to go.”
Egloff handled many of the point guard duties for a Colorado Hawks 15U team, an adidas Gauntlet outfit that really began to gain traction by the end of the summer. He will really have a chance to show what he can do with that club come July, against a highly competitive schedule.
For now, he’s eager to prepare to contribute more for a Regis Jesuit team that already has the look of a team that could make a deep playoff run next season.
“I feel like we’ll be able to play fast,” Egloff said. “We share the ball well. We just work really well together. I think we’ll be good.”
