The 6-6 forward for the Colorado Miners talented 16U team is as solid as brick house, and his strength becomes evident the minute he takes the floor and begins forging space for himself in the post. He battles hard in the paint, crashes the glass and finishes hard.
After spending most of his sophomore season on Rangeview’s junior varsity squad, Ongala is a stock riser who is likely to gain some attention while playing for a Miners team that is off to a very strong start this spring.
“I think we’ve got a lot of potential to do some great things,” Ongala said. “With got a lot of talent and athleticism, and everyone can play. We just need to mesh more together and we’re going to turn some heads.”
Playing in the front court alongside 6-11 Dawson Carper, Ongala took advantage at the Prep Hoops Spring Kick Off last weekend of some of the defensive attention being paid to Carper. Ongala is difficult to box out because of his strong, wide frame and solid athleticism.
Ongala seems to relish employing the toughness necessary to thrive for the Miners — a common trademark among many players on the Randy Perkins-led squad. But the big man is also eager to show the full complement of his tools this grassroots season.
“I want to show how versatile I can be,” Ongala said. “I know I play big, but I can do some other things too. I can make plays in transition. I can create plays for other people as well as score inside at hit that 15-foot jumper. I just want to show that versatility.”
Ongala is still growing into his game, but his confidence seems to be growing each time out. While it may be a bit early to determine just what level, he certainly seems to possess the tools and toughness to play the game at the college level.
