He’s just not yet sure which path those decisions will take him down. The 6-foot-6 unsigned senior small forward is playing for the Colorado Hawks 17s, hoping one last chance to prove himself will help him achieve Division I dreams.
“There’s been a lot of schools talking to me, Division I schools, but like I said it’s all talk,” said Phillips, who is coming off a senior season at Sand Creek in which he averaged 18.7 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. “Nobody has offered. That’s where I’m at right now.”
“I’ve talked to two or three schools in the Big Sky, some in the WAC, Washington State in the Pac-12, Wyoming in the Mountain West. And Florida Atlantic. There are a couple of major conferences, but an offer hasn’t come yet.”
Phillips, an athletic, well-built and versatile forward, is playing on a shoe circuit for the first time after playing with the Salt Lake Rebels the past two grassroots seasons. He had a big game in the Spring Kick Off earlier this month in a semifinal victory over highly talented Hawks 16s, nailing some big second-half 3-pointers to help the 17s hang on for a victory.
After struggling early in the Hawks’ run through the Dallas Adidas Gauntlet stop last week, Phillips closed with a solid seven-point, six-rebound effort in just 10 minutes in a narrow loss to Gateway Basketball Club.
“I feel like I’m fitting in pretty well,” Phillips said at the Kick Off. “We just have to get our chemistry a little better, and once we do that I think we’ll be able to make a great run. I’m super excited. It’s my first year on that type of a circuit, so I’m really excited to play.”
Phillips, who was teammates with nationally ranked class of 2017 forward D’Shawn Schwartz at Sand Creek, isn’t putting too much pressure on himself to land that elusive offer this month. he has other plans in mind to help him reach his basketball goals.
“I’m looking at prep schools, too,” he said. “If I don’t get what I want in April, then I think I’ll go to a prep school.”
Wherever he does end up, Phillips believes he’ll be bring plenty to the table when he gets there.
“My athletic ability and playing above the rim is a strength,” he said. “I’ve really been trying to work on my handles, because if I can run the point in college as a 6-6 point guard, that’s going to up my stock a lot. I think I can shoot the jumper pretty well, so that’s also a plus.”
