So instead of getting frustrated when his 3-pointers were hitting more iron than nylon last season, Seng began putting in extra work. Before practice. After practice. When he could fit the time in, the arms-for-days, 6-foot-4 guard was working on the shooting machine at ThunderRidge.
“We have the (shooting) gun, and I’ve really been using that a lot recently,” Seng said. “I feel like I struggled with it during the school year, but know it’s going in like it used to.”
Actually, the shots seem to be going in more than ever before. Seng couldn’t miss last weekend during the Prep Hoops Spring Kickoff. He hit five 3-pointers in his last game of the tournament with Colorado Chaos, including three in the span of five possessions in the second half.
The 2017 guard has made defense his calling guard. One look at him and his lengthy frame, coupled with his surprising athleticism, and it’s easy to project him as a plus perimeter defender at the next level. Seng isn’t afraid to get on the floor and scrap.
“I’ve been working on being very active and keeping guys in front of me,” Seng said.
Those defensive tools have helped Seng here from a number of coaches who plan to catch him play with Chaos on the Adidas Gauntlet circuit this spring and summer, beginning with Friday’s first stop in Dallas.
“Northern Colorado wants me to come up and play with their players, so that should be fun,” Seng said. “Also a couple Iowa schools: Northern Iowa has been looking at me. And Sioux Falls in South Dakota has been looking at me.”
If Seng can continue to grow as a 3-pointer shooter, further evolving as a good-sized shoot-and-defend guard, his recruiting is likely to pick up on the trail this grassroots season.
For now, he is just eager to help Chaos perform well during its first season on the Gauntlet after a strong showing at the Kick Off that ended in a closing-moments loss to a highly talented Colorado Hawks 16U Red team.
“It (the Kick Off) was a lot of fun,” Seng said. “Getting used to playing with new teammates, I really enjoyed it. I’m really looking forward to the rest of the spring and summer.”
