The 6-foot-4 shooting guard at Lutheran High School in Parker didn’t enter his senior season thinking much about playing college basketball. But his talents have taken off, and they were on display during his team’s victory in the Class 3A quarterfinals on Saturday, leaving his squad two wins away from a state championship.
Bjorgum has great range as a 3-pointer shooter. He knocked down three 3-pointers in the first quarter alone Thursday, finishing with 18 points while displaying a variety of offensive tools and impressive defensive intensity.
“I don’t think he was necessarily looking at it as much,” said Bjorgum’s coach at Lutheran, Brad Brandsma, of his senior’s college basketball aspirations. “Now that we’ve reached this point in the season, we’re trying to get him to believe because his athleticism and with what he can do, I think if you got him in and got him skilled up a little more, get his confidence up, I think he could play at the next level.”
Brandsma has been helping Bjorgum reach out to some Division II schools in California recently.
“They are schools he wanted to go to (academically),” Brandsma said, “and now we’re saying, let’s send film, let’s get in there and see if they’ll give you a shot. They are Division II schools, and I think he can play at that level.”
Bjorgum is a humble standout who deflected praise for his big scoring effort to the teammates he said put him in good position.
“We’ve really worked hard as a team and we have great coaching to help us,” Bjorgum said. “We are happy to get this win and are ready for the Final Four (at 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Denver Coliseum).
Bjorgum, who has averaged 10 points and five rebounds per game this season, said he is open to anything when it comes to his basketball future.
“I would love to play in college,” he said. “I’ve had a few schools looking at me, so it’s just determining if that’s what I want to do.”
