Introducing new Colorado 2018 player rankings
Our steady drop of our new player rankings continues today with a new list of the 2018 class, expanded out to the top 75 prospects.
There is more fluidity in lower classes as some players begin to get their first taste of varsity action, so there has been plenty of change and new additions, including one new member of our top five.
Here is a breakdown of the top five players in the class:
Daylen Kountz, 6-5 wing, George Washington
Kountz has been fantastic this season, more than doubling his scoring average from his freshman year, up to 21.8 points per game. His versatility on both ends makes him already one of the state’s top players, and his play has helped George Washington start 5-0 in the Denver Public League.
Sam Masten, 6-2 guard, Rock Canyon
Masten has run the show for one of the state’s best teams this season, averaging 17 points and four rebounds per game. He is a highly skilled player who can score in a variety of ways, whether he’s getting to the basket or draining consistency from mid-range, and he is a tough-nosed defender who creates havoc on the perimeter.
Kaison Hammonds, 6-3 guard, ThunderRidge
Hammonds has flourished in a key role with the talented, 17-3 Grizzlies. He’s averaging 8.7 points, 3.5 rebounds and a team-leading 3.8 assists per game. Hammonds has good ball-skills, solid length and shows promise from the 3-point line. That package makes him an intriguing prospect.
Tre Pierre, 6-5 forward, Widefield
Pierre has surged up the rankings as a double-double machine for Widefield. The athletic, strong-framed forward has solid footwork, runs the floor well and has soft touch around the basket. He has expanded his game in a big way this season and could be due for a breakout spring.
Jon’il Fugett, 5-11 guard, George Washington
Fugett is a dynamically talented point guard, who has a great motor on both ends of the floor. He can score in bunches thanks to great slashing ability and a jump shot that, while slightly unconventional, has developed consistency. He makes life very difficult on opposing ball-handler as a defender, and he brings a great dose of toughness to the position for the Patriots.
