Note: these are not intended as rankings, merely recognition for squads who have made marked progress over the last calendar year.
Here’s a peek around the 11th Region:
- Paul Laurence Dunbar — The Bulldogs (19-4) have bounced back from a 14-15 mark last season. That includes marquee wins over Lafayette (twice), Henry Clay and Perry County Central and a split with Trinity. Taveion Hollingsworth (21.6 ppg), Darius Williams (16.4 ppg) and Jordan Lewis (11.2 ppg) pace Dunbar’s offense. Tests remain against Henry Clay and Scott County.
- Scott County — The Cardinals slipped to 17-12 last season and missed the region tournament for the first time since 2002-03 after being state runner-up twice in the previous three seasons. Scott County could make a similarly deep run this year based on contributions from Michael Moreno (15.1 ppg, 9.9 rpg), Cooper Watts (12.3 ppg), Cooper Robb (11.8 ppg) and Bryce Long (11.7 ppg). Home dates with Henry Clay on Feb. 5 and Dunbar on Feb. 18 will help determine the region frontrunner entering the postseason.
- Madison Southern — The Eagles are 13-10 after a 13-15 mark a year ago. Madison Southern’s best in-region win is Woodford County, 58-55 on Jan. 5 in Versailles, but outside the region, the Eagles have grounded Franklin-Simpson and Cordia. Caleb Miller (14.2 ppg), Tanner Kidwell (13.4 ppg) and Michael Jefferson (12.6 ppg) lead the Eagles.Honorable mention: Franklin County (8-22 last season, 9-11 this year)
