Note: these are not intended as rankings, merely recognition for squads who have made marked progress over the last calendar year.
Here’s a peek at the 10th Region:
- Bishop Brossart — The Mustangs went 14-12 last season, failed to win the region All “A” Classic after having claimed 11 of the previous 12 such titles, and missed the 10th Region Tournament. Brossart has come back with a vengeance, rolling to a region-best 16-4 start. Jackson Crawford (16.5 ppg) and Jacob Zai (13.7 ppg) lead the Mustangs’ offense. Covington Holy Cross is Brossart’s best win to date. Paris, Beechwood, Lewis County and Greenup County are other conquests with winning records, in addition to a split of two games with Newport. Trips to Augusta on Feb. 2 and Newport Central Catholic on Feb. 6 and a home date with Mason County Feb. 16 provide additional tests.
- Calvary Christian – The Cougars’ 11-8 mark is miles past their 4-23 campaign of a season ago and already is their winningest season since 2010-11. Beth Haven is Calvary’s best win, a 57-54 home triumph on Dec. 19. Akeem Riley (18.4 ppg) and Justin Wade (12.6 ppg) lead the way for the Cougars under new coach Ryan Neises.
- Bracken County – The Polar Bears, 12-17 a year ago, are 10-8 under new coach Jason Hinson, Bracken County’s third coach in three years. Bishop Brossart, Beechwood and Pineville register as quality wins. Austin Crawford (25.8 ppg, 10.4 rpg) and Jacob Hamilton (13.3 ppg) lead the Polar Bears. West Carter and a rematch with Augusta loom for Bracken County.
