Continue ReadingRangeview coach Shawn Palmer has been in charge of the Raiders since the 2003-04 season. His teams have claimed 19 or more wins five seasons in a row, won a number of conference titles and had plenty of success in the 5A state tournament.
So, when Palmer says that senior point guard Jalen Guidry is the “best passer” he’s ever coached, his words carry a lot of weight.
Guidry, a 6-foot-1 and 165-pound floor general for an unblemished 14-0 and No. 1 ranked team, is averaging 4.7 points, 4.7 assists, 2.2 rebounds and two steals per game.
“He’s a team captain, he gets our flow going offensively, his vision gets our guys moving and all the kids trust him,” Palmer said.
On a loaded team with two legitimate Division I prospects in Tyrei Randall and Elijah Blake and plenty of other speedy and versatile players, Guidry helps his team stay in rhythm. He’s ninth in 5A in assists per game and has had seven games of six or more assists. Guidry, who says distributing comes naturally to him, is pleased with the way his final high school season is going.
“I think I’m getting a lot of exposure now,” he said. “The way our team is playing is bringing more attention to us.”
The true point guard, who also possesses an explosive first step, is starting to receive interest from a few junior colleges. He’s also smooth, changes speeds well and is a talented ball-handler. Guidry has started all but one game so far for a team with some of the best depth in the state.
As mentioned, Guidry could be a perfect fit at the junior college level. He says he has a 2.2 GPA. Palmer said he can also improve defensively and he’s working on the consistency of his jump shot as he’s shooting 33 percent from beyond the arc. With his playmaking attributes and athleticism, Guidry can be a potential impact player at the D-II/D-III/NAIA levels down the road. He definitely has upside.
The senior said he just wants an opportunity to compete in college.
“Natural point guards are hard to find,” Palmer said. “I think he could play D-II.”
