Asked to name his offensive strength, the St. Xavier senior rattled off the following:
“I think my overall playmaking ability. I think I have a really nice midrange game that is something I’ve worked on and that I’ve used a lot. I’m also just good at getting to the basket, whether it be if I have a shot for myself or finding other people. I really like finding other people for wide-open shots.
“I also think I’m a pretty good 3-point shooter. The 3s and the midrange, I feel like I’m a good shooter, but I’m obviously not just a shooter. Being a point guard, I can put it on the deck and create my own shot.”
The Tigers are 9-5 going into Friday’s showdown with archrival Trinity. They count competitive losses to Central, Waggener and Southwestern among those setbacks, and also measured themselves out-of-region against Covington Catholic and Bowling Green, both Sweet Sixteen teams a year ago.
“I definitely think having a tough early schedule is gonna benefit us right now and towards the end,” McKim said, “and when district and regions roll around, hopefully we can roll through there, with everything we’ve been through.”
Defensively, McKim said he’s made improvement since the AAU season in the summer.
“I’m quick, so I can get some steals down there, make plays defensively,” he said, “but I’ve also a couple games led us in rebounding. I really like to rebound from the guard spot.”
McKim said he has an offer from Ohio Valley (W.Va.) and is talking to Kentucky Wesleyan (“a lot,” he said) and the University of Charleston (W.Va.).
