Note: these are not intended as rankings, merely recognition for squads who have made marked progress over the last calendar year.
Continuing our swing across the state with a glance at the Third Region:
1. Owensboro Catholic — The Aces went 12-15 last winter and got this season off to an uninspiring start at 0-4. Then Owensboro Catholic rattled off 11 wins in its next 12 contests, the best an overtime victory at Daviess County. The Aces also claim one win in three tries against defending region and state champion Owensboro. Luke Hayden (16.4 ppg), Cameron O’Bryan (11.3 ppg) and Ray Zuberer (10.8 ppg) lead Owensboro Catholic’s offense.
2. Whitesville Trinity — The Raiders, 10-19 a season ago, have already surpassed that win total this winter, with an 11-8 mark. Trinity owns a three-point win against Grayson County, who eliminated the Raiders with a seven-point victory in last year’s 12th District Tournament. Trinity is seeking its first trip to the Third Region Tournament since 2008-09. The Raiders lack an attention-grabbing victory, but could make hay against Edmonson County (originally scheduled for Jan. 22, postponed to a TBD date due to weather) or Breckinridge County (Feb. 12). (Note: The Raiders haven’t provided full stats for this season to the KHSAA or to MaxPreps.)
3. Butler County — Coming off an 8-19 record last season, the Bears are off to a 10-8 start this year. Rex Henderson (17.4 ppg) and Baylee Anderson (16.4 ppg) lead Butler County’s offense. Like 12th District foe Trinity, Butler County doesn’t own any marquee wins, but has four games left against teams with winning records — the Raiders (Jan. 29), Edmonson County (Feb. 5), Breckinridge County (Feb. 9) and Russellville (Feb. 19).
Honorable mention: Meade County (17-11, region runner-up last season, 15-4 this year), Ohio County (6-22 last season, 9-11 this year).
