Note: these are not intended as rankings, merely recognition for squads who have made marked progress over the last calendar year.
Let’s take a glance around the Eighth Region:
- South Oldham — The Dragons went 11-17 last season, but are off to 16 wins in their first 18 tries this year. Wins over the Christian Academy of Louisville, Covington Holy Cross, Oldham County and Meade County give South Oldham cred. So do Jacob Bray (13.9 ppg), Trenton Bouvet (12.3 ppg) and Joe Griffin (11.2 ppg). A trip to Owen County looms on Valentine’s Eve to determine region frontrunner status entering the postseason.
- Walton-Verona — The Bearcats own 12 victories in their first 18 decisions this season, after a 14-14 campaign last winter. Kyle Kinmon‘s 11.4 ppg lead Walton Verona’s offensive efforts. The Bearcats have no wins that jump off the page, but have a crack at Bishop Brossart on Jan. 30 and South Oldham on Feb. 16.
- Williamstown — The Demons sit 10-11, but will happily take that over 6-19, which they were last season. Breenan Stanley‘s 16.1 ppg, Derick Cipollone‘s 11.7 ppg and Jon Jump‘s 10.5 ppg have helped Williamstown’s cause. A trip to South Oldham on Feb. 4 and a home date with Owen County on Feb. 16 will give the Demons opportunities for attention-grabbing efforts.
Honorable mention: Henry County (10-10 this season, 12-18 last year)
