Our No. 3 team in this week’s 5A rankings, the Legend Titans, earned a hard-fought victory over a very good Dakota Ridge team as senior Connor McCord drained a game-winning layup with a couple seconds left. McCord, a 6-foot-6 forward, also had the game-winner in a monstrous win at Denver East to begin the season. He finished with 10 points on 5-of-7 from the field against Dakota Ridge. Fellow seniors Riley Matticks (12 points) and Monroe Porter (11) were solid for the Titans, as well. Legend is 3-0 against a brutal early season schedule of Denver East, Fort Collins and Dakota Ridge.
The Eagles, who also lost to East on a game-winner, fell to 2-2. Senior guard Thomas Bravo racked up 18 points in the loss. Dakota Ridge is expected to contend for another Jeffco championship though.
Far Northeast 62, Mountain View 59 (OT)
Another game that came down to a final shot, the Warriors were able to sneak past the Mountain Lions in overtime of the first round of the Ralston Valley tournament as Sindu Cisse drained a game-winning three-pointer. The sophomore guard finished with 8 points. In a balanced Far Northeast effort, Melek Bar (16 points), Manel Ayol (13), Aaris Bonds (8) and freshman JoVon Nelson (7 points, 11 assists) all contributed offensively. The Warriors, who improved to 3-1, will now face a very good Rock Canyon team in the next round of the tourney at 8 p.m. on Thursday.
Jose Orrantia, a smooth, highly skilled senior guard and potential Division II recruit, had 20 points for Mountain View in the loss. Fellow senior guard Dennis Landry also poured in 20. The Mountain Lions dropped to 2-2.
Windsor 55, Rocky Mountain 53
In yet another wild contest, the Wizards went down 12-2 after one, but defeated the Lobos on a game-winner by Colton McLean, a sharpshooting senior guard and top-100 prospect. McLean finished the game with 21 points. Fellow top-100 seniors Noah Baldwin (14 points, 5 assists) and Michael Scheid (11 points, 11 rebounds) also contributed heavily for Windsor, a team that won their season opener and are 1-0, despite waiting on a couple of football players to get in enough practices. They will face 5A No. 4 Rangeview in the next round of the Poudre/Fort Collins Shootout on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Poudre. Joe Elliott had 13 points for Rocky Mountain in the loss. The Lobos have been very competitive this season, but dropped to 1-4.
Rock Canyon 62, Arvada West 34
Also at the Ralston Valley tournament, the Jaguars ran over the Luke Neff-less Wildcats in a game that was never very close. Kent Grams’ crew dropped their season opener to Eaglecrest, but have responded by winning four in a row. Noah Beck had 17 points for RC. Super sophomore Sam Masten chipped in 11. Arvada West dropped to 3-1 without Neff, one of the best shooters in state history. Neff suffered a concussion last week against Smoky Hill and is expected to return to the lineup either next week or after Christmas.
ThunderRidge 81, Smoky Hill 46
Our No. 2 ranked team handled what might be the youngest group in Colorado. In a game that was close early, 36-30 at the half, the Grizzlies ran away in the final two quarters as Austin Mueller had 21 points, Corey Seng had 18, Kaison Hammonds 15 and Clay Verk 13. Against a team with a ton of potential but still waiting on three transfers and still so youthful, seasoned ThunderRidge was just too powerful in this one. The Grizzles are 4-0. Smoky, after losing a close game to Arvada West last week, is now 0-2.
Overland 74, Lakewood 38
The Tigers jumped on the No. 1 team 9-1 early, but then it was all Overland. Reggie Gibson scored 13 points, Alijah Halliburton, who signed with Wyoming for football this week, had 12, and Jervae Robinson 11. Overland is 2-0. 6-foot-6 junior forward Jacob Storey led Lakewood (0-3) with 21 points. The Tigers played without the services of Kolton Peterson, who suffered a concussion last week.
Lincoln 89, Mitchell 63
The Lancers have some firepower and could be a top 10 team this year. They improved to 4-1 as Rene Melendez, Tino Chavez, Jesse Giron, Jamison Washington and Umar Jalloh all scored between 11 and 16 points. Mitchell fell to 0-5.
Doherty 75, Castle View 64
The Spartans defeated the Sabercats as Dalven Brushier led the way with 21 points, Brevin Brimble had 18, Kayden Washington 15 and BJ Hardy 10. Doherty is 3-1, Castle View is 0-3.
