The Spartans, who have a number of players who project to the next level, have the talent to match up with almost anyone in Class 4A. It was only their carelessness with the basketball at times on Wednesday that prevented them from reaching the full potential of their offense. Turnovers are part of playing within a high-pressure, run-and-gun system, but if TJ can find a way to clean up some of the more unnecessary ones, it will be a load to deal with.
Below is a scouting report on members of the Spartans’ rotation:
Player of the Game: Henry Cooper. The senior provided a steady, calming presence in an up-and-down game and hit a few bit perimeter shots to help break the game open.
It Was Over When: TJ started racking up takeaways and turning them into easy offense late in the second quarter.
Ravel Moody, 6-5 junior forward
Moody is one of Colorado’s most athletic players. Great leaper who can get to the basket with ease. Demonstrates good floor vision. Strong delivering the ball in pick-and-pop situations. He has a good hesitation dribble and a feel for when to change his pace on defenders. Once he adds a little more weight to his frame, Moody will be even more explosive.
Jodaun Dotson, 5-8 freshman guard
Promising, quick young guard who does a lot well. Displayed very active hands on the defensive end, keying effective full-court pressure for the Spartans and coming up with about five or six deflections in the first half alone. Is pretty quick off the dribble and has a nice floater and a strong pull-up jumper. Comes off screens hard and attacks well off the subsequent catch.
Henry Cooper, 6-1 senior guard
Decently athletic combo guard who is active on the defensive end. Solid spot up shooter who works well off the ball. Intelligent guard who recently committed to Nebraska Wesleyan. Has a good one-dribble pull-up off of pick-and-roll action and is a reliable outside shooter.
Galen Street, 6-0 junior guard
Solid shooter whose offense comes working off the ball. Good IQ and motor. Good complementary player.
Breon Harper, 6-3 sophomore guard
Athletic and long, Harper is another player who excels within the Spartans’ press-and-run framework. Has the ability to be a tenacious perimeter defender when engaged. Has solid, high-arching form on his perimeter jump shot. That package of skills and athletic tools to go with his size make Harper an intriguing young prospect.
Xavier Cooper, 6-3 sophomore guard
Solid strength and size for a sophomore. Works really hard on the defensive end with active hands. Good offensive skill-set. Plays mostly off the ball but can also handle it. Particularly effective in transition. A little earlier to determine the level, but he certainly has a future at the next level.
