A sloppy first half turned into an exciting finish with Highlands Ranch sophomore point guard Tyson Gilbert taking over in the fourth quarter to lead the Falcons to the victory.
Below is a scouting report on players from both teams:
Player of the Game: Gilbert. Scored nine of his 17 points in the fourth quarter, scoring buckets in multiple ways.
It Was Over When: Backup guard Nahom Mesfin tracked down a loose ball and got it to Jack Fiddler, who found a cutting Sullivan for a 3-point play with 59 seconds left that put Ranch up three possessions.
HIGHLANDS RANCH
Brendan Sullivan, 6-5 sophomore guard
Good size and length. Good spot-up perimeter defender. Sullivan has solid footwork and can use both hands at the rim with solid touch. Demonstrated a nice pump fake he used effectively to score several times. Made a clutch three-point play in the final minute.
Tyson Gilbert, 5-10 sophomore guard
Gilbert is the Falcons’ best playmaker. Has the ability to break down defenders with both hands, and his long arms help him be efficient at the point of attack. Needs to continue to be more assertive and realize he’s often the best player on the court. Put the Falcons on his back in the fourth quarter and let his talent take over. Really strong going to the rim with both hands. Scored at the rim, with mid-range and behind the 3-point line. Very bright future.
Matt Jeffords, 6-5 senior forward
Jeffords is a big body who isn’t overly athletic but has solid footwork and a really nice soft hook in the paint. He shows the ability to use both hands around the basket.
Jack Fiddler, 6-4 senior forward
Fiddler is the quintessential “glue guy” who does everything well. He can be trusted to handle the ball against the press and can help break down a defensive zone with his ability to whip the ball around the perimeter. As a jump shooter, Fiddler is nearly automatic from the corner 3-point spot. Never takes possessions off. Super high-academic player who would bring great intangibles to a Division II or III program.
Max Holewinski, 6-3 senior forward
Decent athleticism and a determined rebounder. Can knock down an open jumper and uses his length well on the defensive end.
FOUNTAIN-FORT CARSON
Terrell Parr, 5-6 senior guard
The team’s primary ball-handler. Strong with the dribble. Helps move the offense quickly. Strong on the perimeter. Good quickness.
TJ Lucero, 6-foot junior guard
Good catch-and-shoot game. Has a quick release on his outside jumper. Aggressive defender.
Eldonda Davis, 5-10 junior guard
Can catch it and pull it. Really good from from range. Would like to see him hunt his shot a little more because he has the form to get hot in a hurry.
Darius Stewart, 6-3 senior forward
Undersized for a post position but plays it well because of his strength and athlieticims. Decent touch around the basket. Raw but brings solid energy to the floor. Good leadership.
Anthony Schmidt, 6-4 senior guard/forward
Can pull it from three. Good length. High motor. Works hard on the defensive end.
