His interest is Division III and NAIA, and he says two schools in particular are recruiting him most right now.
“I don’t have any offers, but I have some more recruitment; Centre, and Transylvania, Pikeville, Holy Cross (IN) – those are the ones really,” said Whelen.
“I just visited Centre, them and Transylvania are the two probably recruiting me the hardest.”
Right now, Whelan is most concerned with leading his team to as many wins as possible, he he feels the recruitment will then fall into place.
“I’m just worried about playing my game honestly, I’m not really worried about recruitment. I just think it will all come into place, I’m just worried about winning a title,” said Whelan.
The 6-foot point guard has been a pass-first guy in year’s past, but has shifted his focus more toward scoring the ball this season as a senior.
“Offensively I’ve kind of started to explode I’d say, in comparison to what I’ve been doing. I’ve always been a pass-first kind of guy, but with the team we have this year I’ve been asked to be more of a scorer, and I’ve been looking for my stuff more and stiff like that. I think I’ve been pretty successful with that so far this season,” said Whelan.
“I want to continue to work on my defense, I always want that to be the best it can possibly be. In the past we’ve been trying to outscore teams, and this season we’re really trying to be a lock-down defensive team, and I’ve definitely seen my defense improve.”
One key change aside from scoring that Whelan is contributing this season…
“Leadership, I’m the only returning starter from last season so leadership has been huge,” he said. “And then like I said, scoring-wise I’m really having to step up.”
