. The offense flowed well when Smith was running the show in the first half, including back-to-back assists to take a lead early in the first quarter. Tyzai went on to finish with 5 assists, along with 4 points and 6 assists, but he had several more key passes that should have resulted in points. Smith frequently used his fast foot speed and solid handle to beat defenders on the dribble in the half-court, always having his head up to find a passing lane when the rest of the defense collapsed around him.

Tyzai is the first of two Guards from Team USC Premier, who went on to win the 16U Slam Championship this weekend. Smith was named Title Game MVP with 17 points in the final, but I caught up with his team in their tournament opener vs Strong Center. Tyzai knocked down a pair of first-half threes in the game, opening up driving lanes for himself and his teammates as the game went on. Smith displayed elite quickness both in the half-court and transition, frequently beating defenders off the dribble. He finished with 10 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 steals in Game One.

Tyzai was a bright spot for Gilbert in their loss to Fox Creek on Saturday Evening. He was at his best in the open floor, causing turnovers or rebounding and pushing the pace to beat players to the rim. He has good speed, a tight handle, and finishes well at the rim. Smith can do so with either hand and is pretty crafty when it comes to scoring around the trees. He also does not shy away from contact and earned a couple of trips to the free-throw line. He put up 14 Points in the loss but didn’t play much in the second half because of the scoreline.
