Expert Analysis
Sam Duren | Prep Hoops Scout
One of the few true old school set up point guards in Oklahoma. Has good vision and feel. From making the simple but important passes along the perimeter. Togetting into the teeth of the defense and threading the needle with pocket passes in the paint or kick outs to open shooters. Plays defense with a strong motor and the required chip on the shoulder for smaller guards to be irritants and havoc causers. Often settles into a pass first, stir the pot role, but has a potentially underrated offensive game. With a bag of moves to get separation in the mid-range and deep range that extends past the high school three point line.

The sophomore most recently competed against 17U competition with his 16u Mokan EYBL team. Wilborn was aggressive on both ends of the floor and utilized his quick hands to force turnovers. Scyon plays with his head up and showed that he can generate easy baskets for others by playing unselfishly and looking ahead in transition. He made “the right play” on countless occasions by reading defensive rotations after blowing by perimeter defenders also. Wilborn is a solid athlete that can also change tempos with the ball to really put his stamp on things offensively.

Scyon looked like a Division I point guard in the battle versus Edmond Santa Fe. Scyon played a complete game last night, making big play after big play. He went on his own 5–0 run to end a Santa Fe run late in the third quarter. Him ending their run was big time. Had Scyon not scored five straight points, the Wolves most likely would have completed an 18-point comeback. Wilborn’s ability to make big plays and get his team involved was a key factor in their victory. He also got a big steal at the end of the game to seal it and send the Broncos to the semifinals to take on the Panthers.

19 points and 8 assists are loud enough from just looking at the stat sheet. His head on the swivel playing style while have him serving up an alley oop one possession. Then finding a wide open shooter in the corner. Picks his spots very well to score, as he’s learning how to steal a bucket or two by pushing off makes and rebounds. Has some flash with his dribble moves to spin and turn into openings on drives against taller players. Or just straight burry a pull up triple. Would like to see him become more vocal as he matures. But clearly sees and understands the game very well. Which has made a perfect fit on a team filled with shooters and athletic high flyers.

Wilborn had some of the top handles at the event and became one of the toughest covers because of that. Froze defenders with his handles, then was cooking from distance. While also being aggressive on drives and finishing amongst the trees. Wilborn clearly is a hooper with a well drilled game. It was good to see him being aggressive as a scorer. While still mixing in dropping dimes and driving to kick to others.
This winter will see the chance for him to build on the next evolution in his game. Becoming more a true floor general in the halfcourt for a talented Mustang squad.

Wilborn plays with the ball on a string, and is very comfortable as a pass first, teammate elevator guard. It’s been a steady pattern of improvement for the youngster over the last 9 months. First it asserting himself more at the high school level, with spurts of scoring to go along with his playmaking nation. Then settling in with LeGYnds as a guard capable of impacting winning without even having to score the ball. He’s heady and havoc causing on defense. While also valuing the ball exceptionally well.
His final AAU game of the spring was also a sign he’s getting more comfortable as a scorer at the national level. Wilborn’s change of direction and handles makes him a terror in the mid-range. The ability to get defenders on skates will serve him well as he looks to increase his scoring output.

A hand injury limited Wilborn’s scoring impact, but not his contributions to winning. Fits in perfectly to the guard heavy team, by being a nuisance and havoc causer on defense. Then quickly turns defense into offense with transition playmaking. While also having a remarkable feel in the half court to not turn the ball over. And also be the straw to stir the drink for his team. Racked up steals, assists and hockey assists. The small guard continues to profile as a bet on production type prospect. As he’s skilled and understands the game.

After a strong end to his freshman season, Wilborn is continuing his efficient and effective play with a loaded 15U squad. He has an outstanding combination of vision and handles. From making highlight reel plays in transition. To pocket passes on drives, and the correct reads in between. Provides scoring sparks at times, including threes. And isn’t afraid to get his noise dirty on the defensive end, as a “pest” like defender.
