Olentangy Orange is going through some growing pains early in the season after graduating a stacked senior class and missing their star point guard due to injury. With a loaded schedule there hasn’t been any time for the new faces to get comfortable at the varsity level but the flashes they’ve shown against this elite competition suggest they should be dangerous in February and March. Wilson is one of those names as a player who is active on the defensive end of the court, had a nice extension step finish at the rim and didn’t look out of place athletically Vs some of the top players at his position in Ohio. A small college target who should continue to improve with more experience, Wilson has a chance to really breakout late in the year.
Olentangy Orange are the defending state champions and Wilson got quality experience with that group last season as an end of bench option. Wilson had a strong fall league showing and made plays during June and scrimmage action for the Pioneers. Any player with the athleticism, motor, positional size and experience playing in a program like Olentangy Orange will have a chance to play at the college level and I’d be intrigued in Wilson as a high energy wing athlete to add to a small college program.
I really enjoyed watching ‘Cal PA’ all season in the fall league as their chemistry was among the best in the entire fall league. While a couple of players from their team could’ve been nominated for this team, I ended up selecting Wilson as the top athlete and transition player on the roster. It seemed like their team was at their best in the open court off turnovers and rebounds and Wilson was the spark plug to help push the tempo. I could see a breakout senior season for Wilson this winter.
Wilson was one of the more dominant two way players I saw all day, forcing numerous turnovers and grabbing a ton of rebounds. A talented wing athlete, Wilson can turn defense into offense in an instant with quick transition opportunities. I was impressed with Wilson’s use of his left hand, making plays off the dribble and finishes with it in the paint. His best move of the day came on a pump fake then pivot where he finished with a scoop lefty layup. Another move Wilson likes to go to is the euro step, where he can finish around rim protectors.
Wilson has a strong frame and used his body and muscle to overpower defenders at the rim. Able to put his shoulder into the defender and score through contact, I was impressed with the efficiency Wilson scored with on drive to the paint. Able to score off cuts, triple threat attacks and transition opportunities, Wilson saw the most success when he was able to get all the way to the basket.
