Expert Analysis
Tony Roe | Prep Hoops Scout
Roach was fantastic in the second half in the Warriors win over Prairie, scoring 15 of his team-high 18 points in the final 16 minutes. A lightning-quick guard who handles it really well, he has fantastic vision and is able to split doubles while keeping his dribble alive. He shoots it at a high clip off both the dribble and the catch, and while he has a pretty slight frame, he’s tough to slow down when he gets his defender on his hip. He had 5 rebounds, 6 assists, and 3 steals to go with his 18 points on 7-10 shooting (2-4 3P, 2-4 FT).

played with a competitive fire throughout this game and impacted Waukee’s win in a multitude of ways. For starters, he was impossible to stay in front of. Max showcased his deep bag of dribble combos that he used to consistently shake defenders and blow by them. Max is an insanely smooth operator of the offense, and he rarely gets sped up. He displayed great speed and burst as a driver, and he got to the rim at will in this game. At the rim, he hit many contested layups through contact. His touch is elite, and he can finish around defenders through tough angles. He was able to get defenders on his hip constantly, which allowed him to get to his floater in the lane, which he hit at a high clip and had no issue making these shots at high speeds and while off balance. He was also great at using his body to create space. There was a moment in this game where he shook his defender off the dribble, got them off balance, and then used his shoulder to bump them, which sent them to the floor and allowed him to pull up for a midrange bucket. He displayed an ability to hit deep threes off of dribble handoffs as well. His three-level shot creation ability allowed him to create many advantages for his team, and he displayed high-level court vision, kicking out to open shooters and creating many open looks for the offense. He did all of this while being a very feisty and engaged defender, picking up full court and ripping opposing ball handlers for steals.

had an extremely versatile impact throughout this game. For starters, he was elite as a playmaker in the pick and roll, and in general he showcased a very fast processing speed when it came to reading the defense. He created many open shots attacking off of screens and finding cutters and shooters. He was also elite as a baseline inbounder, where he displayed an ability to read actions and find his teammates for open shots off the inbound. Another area where Max was great was his downhill driving abilities. Max gets super low and has crazy burst and speed. He routinely blew by defenders and finished tough layups at high speeds and through contact. He showcased an elite ability to contort his body and finish around thickets of defenders. His downhill threat is magnified by his elite outside shooting ability. Max has a quick and fluid release that he can hit from way outside, even while being fouled. And when you couple all of his offensive skills with the fact that he procured many steals in this game, you truly have an elite performance.
