Expert Analysis
Charles Yates | Prep Hoops Scout
One of the most underrated seniors left that is unsigned in the city of Houston, if not the state of Texas. Let’s examine some strong points of James’ game:
- t
- Active hands-on defense. He never stops moving and is able to guard positions 1 through 5. His athleticism allows him to raise up for big time blocks and rebounds.
- Calm and patient with the ball in his hands on offense. He doesn’t force passes and will always look for the best shot possible. Can beat you driving to the basket or spotting up from midrange or three-point land.
- He is one of the best motivators and encouragers on the court. Coaches always want a natural born leader on the floor for their squad at all times. Martez does this in high school and can definitely do it at the collegiate level.

is an unsigned double-double machine who put up an average of 14.4 points, 11.1 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, and 1.5 blocks per game. He showed no problem establishing position in the low post or boxing out for rebounds due to his powerful strength and sturdy frame. A bruiser with terrific finishing skills inside, James throws is weight around incredibly well often going out of his way to initiate and score through body contact at the rim leading to multiple chances at the foul line in each and every game this past season. Martez was a big time impact player for his College Park squad in their late afternoon/evening game against Westfield and he was also a vocal leader on both sides of the ball. James may not have had the most points, but he changed the game in several ways for the Cavs, rebounding with aggression and tenacity, as well as running the ball up the floor and breaking the press when needed. Martez has recently received offers from Bridgewater College, Texas Lutheran University, and Minnesota North College. With his recruitment still wide open, James will look to continue this high impact play into the regular season and help the Cavs make a strong case for themselves to open up district play.

, a gifted board crasher standing at only 6-foot-5-inches, plays with a dominant presence that ranks him among the top glass cleaners in the state. Game after game, Martez controls the boards, delivering over 10 double-digit rebounding performances in his junior season. He relies on his natural sense for rebounding and an understanding of angles and trajectories to track missed shots, positioning himself swiftly. With a good first and second jump, James demonstrates the effort, reach, and timing to tip the ball to himself when necessary or outcompete his opponent for the ball midair.

had a big round 1 impact against the Nimitz for his College Park Cavaliers squad. James was all over the court running the floor on both offense and defense, making hustle plays and scoring the ball at will. Martez finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds, pulling down a double-double in the contest and making it look too easy in the post. It was a hard fought game for both teams as the physicality laid a heavy toll on the athletes, but in the end the Cavs took the victory 67-66. Martez will continue this sky high momentum into grassroots/AAU season as he will look to make a name for himself on a big stage.
