Jim Hicks and Doug Jones never fail to put on a spectacular event and this one did not disappoint. Let’s take a look at the stars who shined the brightest in their respective contests.
Clarence Payia Clarence Payia 6’6″ | SG Beaumont United | 2024 State TX went off in the morning game on Saturday against Episcopal, raining down jumpers from everywhere on the floor and it didn’t matter if the defense contested or not, the shot was going in. Clarence is looking to make a strong case after recently opening back up his recruitment and did so in this game by electrifying the audience and making coaches take notice. Payia displays a high level versatile skill set and size that allows him to score from all levels of the floor and knock down open shots even with a hand in his face. he had several and one finishes at the basket and threw down a few dunks as well. Clarence is the perfect blend of size, speed, and on court IQ needed at the collegiate level for a winning team.
J’Mar Franklin

J’Mar made the defense pay for leaving him open at critical moments in the afternoon contest against Dickinson. Franklin has shown himself to be a formidable playmaker and also get a bucket when his team needs a score on the offensive end. J’Mar is one of the more underrated point guards in the district after recently transferring from ST. Thomas Catholic High School and he will make a big impact for a Panthers team that graduated many seniors from last year. J’Mar runs a deadly pick and roll with big man Logan Alexander Logan Alexander 6’9″ | PF C.E. King | 2025 TX , throwing him alley-oops under the basket to finish with authority. He always know where his teammates will be on the floor at all times and is a willing playmaker and facilitator. Franklin will look to make a big splash during regular season play with his recruitment still wide open.
Martez was a big time impact player for his College Park squad in their late afternoon/evening game against Westfield and he was also a vocal leader on both sides of the ball. James may not have had the most points, but he changed the game in several ways for the Cavs, rebounding with aggression and tenacity, as well as running the ball up the floor and breaking the press when needed. Martez has recently received offers from Bridgewater College, Texas Lutheran University, and Minnesota North College. With his recruitment still wide open, James will look to continue this high impact play into the regular season and help the Cavs make a strong case for themselves to open up district play.
Todd was a big time catalyst in Fort Bend Elkin’s upset win over Katy Seven Lakes on Saturday. Woods led the offense, facilitating for his teammates and getting some big time shots to fall in crunch time. Todd showed no intimidation even with his squad clearly being the underdogs and was determined to make an impact one way or another. Woods is great at controlling the pace of the game and was essential on defense as well for the Knights, pressuring the opposing matchup into several turnovers and leading to several easy transition layups. What Woods lacks in size he makes up for with his heart and passion for the game whenever he is on the floor. Todd will continue to be one of the senior leaders for this team as they look to ride the wave of momentum coming from this contest.
