Expert Analysis
Duvalier Johnson | Prep Hoops Scout
Ellison made the switch over to Regis Groff, and once he started to play, it gave them another on-ball weapon that they could use. They have elite guard play at Regis Groff, and if he finds his groove, I feel as if they can be the favorites in 5A this year. He’s dangerous with the ball in his hands, counters and breaks defenders down in is,o and finishes well around the basket. He’s a creative offensive player who also gets some himself going defensively. He feeds off of his teammates, attacks the rim, and should be a game-changer for Regis Groff this year. With pretty much only the end of his junior season on varsity, he needs to get off to a hot start as he’s one of 5A’s best secret weapons

Malik was able to play in the 2nd half of the season, and Regis Groff just looked like a more complete team when he was in the mix. Malik gave them another primary ball handler, a guy who could break a defender down off the bounce and either score or dish it off. He’s a smooth player with the ability to get it done. He averaged 11.8 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 2.5 assists a game. He was also able to speed opposing guards up and turn them over, and that is why they averaged one of the most steals per game out of any team in the state. Regis Groff will look for his leadership next year as a combo guard, and this is a big summer he can get his name out there a bit more. He makes a rankings debut this time around.

Ellison is a player that not many know about, but that changes in their game against East. He’s so smooth. He’s a three-level scorer who the game comes easily to. He gets to his spots, he finds mismatches and attacks them, and is a two-way standout. Ellison is a perfect complementary piece for this Regis Groff team and fits with their tenacity and intensity. He’s poised with the ball in his hands, he makes the extra pass when it’s needed, and he can score in bunches. He’s a microwave scorer who can get going at any time and will be the biggest secret weapon in this game, as there is not too much film on him, and this is the first time seeing him in this setting. This is our first time writing about him, but we expect that to change moving forward.
