Chad Graham | Prep Hoops Scout
Wright didn’t suddenly become a better athlete or add a new skill to his arsenal for his final year. It was his competitive drive and will-to-win that made the difference for Sallies. Always playing with a sense of urgency, he relentlessly sought to put two feet into the paint – to score or pass – and to get up catch-and-shoot threes. Wright never gave his man a moment to rest, not even on defense, where he scrapped for 50/50 balls and forced turnovers. So regardless of who his team faced, Wright was always willing to battle to the end.

After giving maximum effort on defense in the first quarter, Wright got on the scoreboard by trailing into a catch-and-shoot three in transition. From there, he incessantly put pressure on the rim. Wright slid into the paint off the dribble 1v1, off the catch, and using pick-and-roll. His ability to stop, start and change directions was reminiscent of his older brother and caused problems for the Colonials all game long. And for his valiant effort, he tallied 15 points and 3 stocks (2s 1b).

Wright is a river rat floor general who frequently finds ways to live in the paint when on the attack. His body allows him to eat up space on both ends of the floor. He showed that can stretch the floor as a shot-maker and connected on two threes. He did a nice job of finding his teammates for scoring chances and had several assists. Wright would be a great addition to a college program.

Sallies finished 1-1 on the week, including a narrow overtime defeat, but got a massive effort from their senior lead guard in the process. Wright was effective in both games en route to averaging over 18 points, while also splitting seven assists nearly evenly across the two contests. He used a polished on-ball skillset to work to his spots with a mature pace that allows him to keep his head up and make the proper read as both a scorer and a playmaker for others. He kept things honest with a pair of 3’s in each game as well and really stepped up in the clutch to help force overtime in an eventual loss against Potomac School (VA). Wright has a clear stake in any argument regarding the best guards in the state and has a chance to play his way into scholarship-level recruitment over the rest of the winter.

Wright’s competitive spirit shines through most when he’s setting others up off-the-bounce and/or hitting big shots in the clutch. If he can channel that into production at the point-of-attack defensively, he’ll be even more dangerous.

It took Wright a bit to feel his way into the game, but he battled admirably before getting going in the second half to spark a Salesianum rally. A vintage dribble-drive floor general, Wright was quiet in the scoring column but was increasingly effective throughout the game in breaking his man down off the bounce before getting into the lane to find open teammates for layups or 3s. He showed advanced vision and poise as a passer despite not having his shot falling from the perimeter. Wright’s leadership and competitive spirit also went a long way as his team never quit despite missing pieces and a sizable early deficit. The true lead guard looks like a gem for the small-college level with a definite opportunity to play his way into a scholarship over the course of the next year.
