Carter proved again last night that whenever he’s on the floor for Spalding, their ceiling as a team lifts significantly. The 5-foot-10 floor general is exactly that, a coach on the floor that can make a play anytime the ball is in his hands. Since he returned from injury, I have yet to see a defender keep him at bay for multiple possessions as the quick-twitch guard can get into the paint whenever he pleases. He plays with tremendous patience on those drives and can dissect the defense before making correct reads as a scorer or distributor. His ability to blow by his defender with regularity is paired with the threat that he poses from beyond the arc where he can get his shot off with efficiency and in a split-second. Had Carter not been nicked by the the injury bug for spurts of this season, I’d have him firmly in the mix for BCL POY along with

Another bump up the ranks for the star PG from Spalding. Big season coming up for the rising senior as he has been making some noise already this summer. Great production on the circuit followed by impressive team performances with his new-look Spalding team. Kam still runs the helm at the 1 wherever he’s at and controls the flow and offense to a T. Never lets the defense rush or speed him up and makes heady decisions with greater outcomes. Deadeye shooter from beyond and has a shifty handle that helps him slip to the bucket for floaters and quick layups over the help. I expect a big year from Kam as Spalding has a chance to be special in the BCL this year.

-Carter did a phenomenal job of attacking the defense and using his defender’s balance against them to draw fouls in a tight game that came down to the last possession. The FT performance (9/10) was crucial in keeping the Spalding offense alive, in addition to a big 3 and two long rebounds that Carter turned into 2 points at the other end. The senior floor general is really hard to turnover and understands when he needs to call his own number vs when he needs to find a shot for a teammate.

-One of several guards impressing for a Spalding team that has exceeded expectations out the gate as they sit in sole possession of 1st place in the BCL. Carter is the straw that stirs the drink as a high-IQ floor general that makes plays for teammates with or without a screen, manipulating the defense with eyes to take advantage of over-helping/late rotations. The scoring is consistently hitting in the mid teens to go along with 5 or 6 assists with low turnovers, a good recipe for a successful point guard at the HS level. Has had some big moments late in games, hitting a game-winning 3 behind a screen in one game and reeling off 6 straight points after being re-inserted late in a game that saw him plagued with foul trouble. Expect high academic schools to get involved as he continues to prove his worth on the big stage.

Carter does a really good job running the show and has a great pulse on finding the right spots to make his teammates better. He plays at a great pace and is able to change gears. He also has good touch inside and can get to the foul line. He was able to turn defense to offense.

-Keep coming away impressed by the floor general’s well-rounded impact on the game, frequently turning in double digit stat lines with ~5 rebounds and assists. Carter started the game off hot with 4 early assists, 3 leading to shooters out of sets but the most impressive being a thread-the needle whip pass with the left hand from the left slot to the roller at the rim for the easy layup. Still want to see him stay home more often defensively and force opponents to make shots over him, but his activity off the ball makes up for it on most nights. Carter’s year-to-year improvement shows the maturity as a pass-first point guard that is understanding how to get his own within the flow of the offense. If he can add a consistent floater and more finishing moves around the basket, I expect his recruitment to pick up over the next 7 months.

20p 5a 4r 2s vs Lane Tech
-Carter’s ability to control pace, take care of the rock, and vacillate between scoring and distributing continues to impress scouts and college coaches alike. Against Lane Tech he established himself as a scoring threat early, hitting a stepback 3 after cashing out on a C+S 3 point look from the corner midway through the 1Q. Carter is playing through contact much better this season, not allowing himself to be bumped off his path to the rim and knifing in from the perimeter off of quick jab moves on his perimeter catches. Carter is the type of PG that will make sure the big dogs eat in the paint and usually does a good job locating his shooters on the perimeter. I want to see him stay home more often defensively. He’s coming away with more steals because he’s shooting the gap to dig away a steal as a helper or timing his lunges at the basketball as a POA defender. But at his size– if he’s out of position, it’s difficult for him to get out of jail without fouling while riding his defender’s hip. Still, the skillbase and year-to-year development speak to his upside as a Ivy/Patriot league prospect.

10p 5a 3r 3s vs Mt. Carmel
-Savvy floor general takes care of the rock and finds teammates well in the halfcourt, but his scoring within the flow of the offense is beginning to look more natural. Carter walked into a 3 early in the game, threw a 1-handed whip pass from the top of the key to a teammate on the opposite block, then hit a stepback three towards the end of the shot clock. His play down the stretch of games isn’t always loud but is often effective, picking his opponent’s pocket and scoring a layup before dishing out two assists in transition to put the game out of reach for good. His IQ off the ball to time his digs down to the low block to come up with a steal or force a turnover often lead to good things for the Cavaliers. He will need to continue to put on weight and bump his matchup off their driving line to the rim to cut down on some easy layups that he allows, spurning the “sidestep and swipe for a steal” attempts to stay in front of his matchup and force the issue at the rim. But I have faith that he’ll get there as a prospect.
