The last game of the day needed overtime to decide a winner and the hometown Elks got it done with another signature victory at Flyin’ To The Hoop, an event they’ve had tremendous success over the years. Powell is a big-time shooter and his game-high 24 points were LOUD. Isidore Newman kept letting Powell catch and shoot with his feet set and Powell rarely missed when he saw a clean look at the rim. Centerville’s ball movement and 11 3-pointers were the difference in the end as Powell’s teammates found him when he was open and he made the defense pay.

One of the few committed prospects in the individual pathway division, Powell was aggressive in getting his shots up when he got to his spots. Transition was where Powell looked to leak out and often got fed for breakaway slam dunks. As a shooter, Powell is capable of running off screens and hitting contested shots without much time or space. Showing more ball handling and the ability to attack off the bounce this week, Powell is going to need to be able to attack closeouts with regularity at the next level.

Powell had one of the best shooting performances I’ve seen all weekend. Powell’s talent and skill as a player are not in question but with Midwest 3SSB this weekend he was unconscious from beyond the arc. His confidence was through the roof. He was knocking down everything; off the dribble, catch and shoot, and coming off of screens. He needed very little space to get his shot off because of his long wingspan and unlimited range. If he did hit it when you were near him, he’d let you know about it too. Showed some great passion and competitiveness. He showed that he has the ability to score a lot of points with limited to no dribbles at all. The kid played from inside a telephone booth and was killing it this weekend.

After a frustrating first EYBL session with All Ohio Red, Powell made the move to Midwest Basketball Club 3SSB to play for his high school coach Brook Cupps. With the new system, Powell has regained his form and reminded people why he’s a nationally ranked prospect with a top five list full of high major powerhouses. Powell is getting easier looks with Midwest and knocking down these open jumpers at a high clip. In transition he’s also able to show off some of his athleticism with dunks and he had one nice extension finish with his right hand past a shot blocker. While still inconsistent when attacking off the bounce and trying to beat defenders, he isn’t required to do that as often to still get clean looks. Powell is showing that in the right system he can be a very productive player, but whatever college gets him will need to know how to use him to the best of his abilities.

One of the top shooters in the Midwest, Powell struggled from long range this weekend shooting 8/24. There aren’t a lot of easy looks generated by All Ohio’s guards for Powell and he took some rushed and contested shots that were low percentage. Not very quick with the ball in his hands, Powell struggles to create his own shot at the EYBL level. I still am a big fan of Powell’s game, there were just some weaknesses that were highlighted this weekend that college programs should be aware of when recruiting him. If Powell goes to the right system that will feed him open shots, he can be a big time producer, but asking him to create for himself and hit contested jumpers could lead to similar results as this weekend.
