Will Armishaw | Prep Hoops Scout
Ocasio, a guard out of Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts, stands out as one of the bigger stock risers in New England over the course of the last two months of the season. The crafty lead guard is an elite processor that seemingly always makes the right decision in the half-court. He gets to his spots off the bounce, makes terrific reads out of ball screens, and is uber efficient as a scorer in the mid-range. Defensively, he can guard either back-court spot, does a great job of moving his feet to stay in front of opposing ball-handlers, and has good instincts on when to dig down on bigs. Beyond all that, he has winning intangibles and is a leader on the floor. He’s going to make a Division III program look really smart as he’s the type of prospect that will win a lot of games over the next four years.

Ocasio, a senior guard out of Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts, looks to be all the way back from a knee injury he suffered last winter and is in complete control of the offense in the half-court. Deerfield is 9-2 in Class A games, good for the 2nd spot in the standings right now. Ocasio does a great job of playing at different speeds in the half-court, makes good decisions out of ball screens, and delivers the ball on time and on target as a passer, allowing his teammates to score more easily. He’s a terrific shot creator late in the clock and shows the ability to score it in bunches in the mid-range and from behind the arc. He’s a big time competitor that takes pride on guarding the opponents best perimeter scorer on the other end of the floor. Ocasio remains uncommitted at this point in time.

Ocasio is so fundamentally sound. The Deerfield senior recently had 18 points, 3 assists and 3 steals in a win against previously undefeated Phillips Andover. He has a beautiful-looking shot and made four threes against PA, but he can also drive closeouts and finish at the rim when he needs to—he uses slow steps and general footwork quite effectively, and he does a good job using his body and spinning off of defenders. Ocasio is uncommitted but will absolutely find a college fit.

Ocasio is a very skilled and crafty guard who plays with great pace and control on the offensive end. While he won’t shock you with speed, quickness or athleticism, he made multiple moves to the hoop exhibiting supreme footwork and patience in the paint. He pulls his entire offensive game together with a great jab step and pull-up game.

Rise: +19
A high academic prospect with Rivals Elite, Ocasio is a combo guard that has “in the gym” range on his jumper. He’s ultra competitive, plays with a chip on his shoulder, and leaves it all on the floor every game. He’s shown breakdown ability off the bounce this spring and has some impressive wiggle with the ball in his hands, allowing him to create space and passing lanes. He knows how to read a defense, makes good reads in ball screen actions, and does a good job of picking his spots as a scorer. Defensively, his toughness and compete level shine through and he’s the type of guy who will willingly give up his body to win a game. High academics already have him on their radar and I’d expect he’ll be a highly sought after recruit this winter.

Jonathan Ocasio Jonathan Ocasio 6'0" | PG Deerfield Academy | 2026 State New E is a point guard who can create shots for himself. Shooting off the dribble from mid-range and three is no problem, easily getting to his spots on the court and drilling his attempts through the net. Ocasio is creative in his shotmaking by taking step-backs in the corners or pull-ups in transition. He is also quick on his drives and contains a tight handle, blazing by defenders and finishing at the rim. Ocasio leverages his scoring well with great passing instincts on the move. He finds teammates with bounce passes through traffic and whip-around passes to the perimeter for open shots. Ocasio’s dangerous scoring and shotmaking make him unstoppable at times and should be a high priority for programs and coaches needing a lead guard.
