Expert Analysis
Eric Wallace | Prep Hoops Scout
A lanky, left handed combo guard with good positional size, Smith is at his best attacking the rim and creating in the midrange. An above average athlete, he uses his length to finish through traffic and extend over defenders. His size and wingspan also translate defensively, where he can disrupt passing lanes and guard multiple positions. He rebounds well from the perimeter and consistently impacts the game beyond scoring.

-Surprised at the relatively quiet recruitment for this 2-way guard with a great frame and good positional size. Smith serves as a connector on the wing that is capable of attacking closeouts, knocking down shots off the catch, and playing unselfish basketball to ensure that the defense has to make extra rotations. Smith blocked a perimeter jumper, blocked a layup attempt under the basket, and is a good off-ball defender that understands when he needs to jump passing lanes for deflections and when to crack down on the post to prevent opposing bigs from getting off clean looks around the basket. His ability to be disruptive defensively and play his role offensively makes him a pretty seamless fit for most programs at the next level.

Smith continue put together a solid all-around floor game every time I watch him play. Showcasing his ability to slice through defenses and create consistently off the bounce. He displayed strong body control, feel, and poise while making plays for himself and others, all while leading by example on the floor. Smith’s steady production and command of the game continue to stand out in a big way.

The lone underclassman in a well-oiled lineup of seniors, Smith is consistently rock-solid wit his two-way presence at the point of attack. A well-built lead guard who uses his strength to outmuscle opponents downhill, he also shows a nice feel for game as an active setup man for his teammates. He has no problem rebounding despite his smaller stature and is willing to thrive as a glue guy who sets the table for others. Smith’s reliability is a selling point, but his upside will be determined by how much he can put pressure on defenses as a scorer, either from the arc or at the rim.

16p 3r 2a vs Westchester
-The sophomore guard came up big time in a primetime matchup between Ariza/Ament with a 4/6 performance beyond the arc to space the floor for Highland in the win. A big shot-taker and big shot-maker, Smith isn’t afraid of the spotlight and can step into big shots without touching the ball for the first half of the possession. Like his progression over the past year of attacking closeouts, getting two feet in the paint to force the defense to shift after he’s hit a few jumpers. Want to see what his decision-making skills look like more often in the halfcourt, want to see if he can make skip passing reads in the split seconds he has coming off of screens, what his post entry passing skills look like, etc. Expect him to continue to thrive in an off-ball role this year playing behind a senior-laden group.

Show flashes in the game against McNamara game that make him an highly intriguing. Great blend of size and fluidity, showing comfort in being able to step out at times but also finish in highlight fashion at the basket.
