We recently updated our 2027 class rankings in Virginia, with it being one of the deepest rankings I have been apart of in my 10 years with the Prep Hoops VA site. We will take a look at some of the top players in each region of the state from a positional standpoint, starting with the top 10 guards in the Northern VA area.

#13) [player_tooltip player_id='2353606' first='Amani' last='Asare'] | 6'0” PG | Highland

Asare had a huge junior season at Highland earning All State and All EPL honors, and this summer he's been showing out in front of college coaches picking up multiple division one offers heading into the scholastic live periods. The 6'0” guard could be described as a “pitbull” as he's a strong and tough nosed guard who can pick up the length of the floor and turn defenders. He's shifty off the bounce and gets to the rim where he's a good finisher, he scores it from all three levels off the bounce, and he puts a ton of pressure on the defense and makes plays for others.

#17) [player_tooltip player_id='2353555' first='Malachi' last='Terrell'] | 6'1” PG | The St. James

Terrell is having a huge spring with Team Museum on the Pro16 Circuit, and after being one of the best guards in the DMV this past season he continues to show his leadership as a floor general. He's super shifty off the bounce and changes speeds well to get in the lane, he handles pressure and works really well in ball screens, he can score it off the bounce from multiple levels, and he sets the tone with his defensive pressure and ability to push in transition to make plays.

#20) [player_tooltip player_id='2353569' first='Makiah' last='Gray'] | 6'0” PG | Bethel Academy

Gray absolutely blew up during the first live period of June playing with Team Durant on the EYBL Circuit, and he's going to see a lot of offers come in if he continues to play that way this summer. He's the type of guard coaches love as he sets the tone with his aggressive play on both ends of the floor, he's both strong and shifty with the ball in his hands, he can score it efficiently from multiple levels, and he can run the show and make players better too.

#21) [player_tooltip player_id='3571110' first='Judah' last='Bontemps'] | 5'11” PG | The St. James

Bontemps was one of a number of talented guards for The St. James last year, and he's set to have a big summer with a lot of college interest as well. While he isn't the biggest guy he's an explosive and dynamic athlete with great bounce and hang time to finish over bigger defenders, he can really knock it down from deep both off the catch and off the bounce, he is fantastic in transition with his speed and playmaking, and he has the ability to change the game on both ends of the floor.

#37) Camontae Griffin | 6'1” PG | Gillion Academy

Griffin was part of one of the deepest backcourts in the DMV at Gillion Academy, and he's set for a huge scholastic live period as he'll be one of the feature guys for this team this summer. The 6'1” Baltimore native is a tough nosed guard who is strong and physical on both ends of the floor, he can knock down shots from deep with great range, he can create off the bounce and works well in ball screens, and he can impact the game in a number of different ways.

#38) [player_tooltip player_id='2470569' first='Jemal' last='Smith'] | 6'3” CG | Highland

Smith has been a staple for Highland in their three year run that has seen them rise to borderline national status, and he's one of the more underrated guards in the DMV with good versatility and the ability to play both guard positions. The 6'3” combo oozes toughness with his ability to pick up the length of the floor and his willingness to sacrifice his body to fight for loose balls, he is shifty off the bounce and hits angles quickly to get to the rim, he can knock down shots from multiple levels, and he is willing to accept different roles to help his team win.

#39) [player_tooltip player_id='2470596' first='Ben' last='Edmonds'] | 6'1” PG | Episcopal

Edmonds has quite been one of the top scoring guards in the DMV this past season, as he has been a big reason for the revival of the Episcopal program and has quite a few college coaches that are interested in him. While he's not overly athletic he's tough as nails as he's willing to get downhill and draw contact and get to the line, he picks up and guards the length of the floor and is a gritty on ball defender, he can knock down shots from deep and get to spots in the midrange, and when the bump is really good he steps it up another notch regularly.

#58) [player_tooltip player_id='2788037' first='Kevin' last='Reyes'] | 6'2” PG | Stone Bridge

Reyes emerged seemingly out of nowhere a couple of years ago, and since then he's been one of the most consistent guards in Loudoun County and is a name college coaches should get familiar with moving forward. The 6'2” lead guard is a super savvy floor general who can create both in ball screens and in isolation situations, he scores it efficiently off the bounce from all over the floor, he can work off the ball and is a knock down shooter from deep on the move, and he makes every team he's on better with his winning style of play.

#64) [player_tooltip player_id='2548309' first='Masyn' last='Miller'] | 6'4” CG | Heritage (Leesburg)

Miller is another one of those Loudoun County public school stars who is getting overlooked by colleges because he doesn't play in the bigger conferences, but the past two seasons he's been one of the most consistent guards in the DMV. At 6'4” he has great positional size with a great skillset playing both on and off the ball, he is a sniper from deep with good range and a quick release, he can get to spots and is excellent at both creating space and drawing contact, and no matter how tightly you guard him he's going to find a way to get open and score the ball.

#78) [player_tooltip player_id='2470580' first='Elijah' last='Simpkins'] | 6'2” CG | Bishop Ireton

Simpkins has been a very focal part of Ireton's resurrection over the past few years, and while he's played behind some talented guards over the past few years he will have a chance to be one of the go to guys when the Scholastic Live Periods come up. The 6'2” combo has long arms and a frame that will fill out nicely moving forward, he is dynamic in transition whether he's running the floor or pushing the rock himself, he's a big time finisher when he gets downhill, and he brings a lot of energy on the defensive end as well.
