Umstead actually recently picked up an offer from Oberlin College, and he’ll be looking to make a college decision soon. He’s a physical forward that plays well out of ball screens, stretches the floor, and has nice touch in the post and around the rim. Really good in space and having an ability to get his balance and finish. Something he could look to improve before he gets to school is his back to the basket post game, but he may be just as competent as a driver and finisher offensively.

Umstead is one of a few names to keep an eye on at Westchester Country Day School in the NCISAA. He’s a versatile workhorse at the forward spot who’s shown he can play with a ton of energy inside and out in many situations. He’s made a name for himself on the PH platform over the past few months with NC Spartans and as a top performer at this year’s Top 250 Expo at Cox Mill High. He’s a sizeable big man at 6-foot-6 for DII and DIII programs in need of a paint presence who continues to develop.

Umstead was impressive as one of the best shooting bigs in the entire gym on Sunday. He’s great either spotting up on the perimeter or setting screens and popping from them. A solid release that is repeatable and should be usable at the next level. I like how much he’s devoted to making it a strength in his game, and it showed as defenses were quick to respect the shot as soon as they saw it go in.

Umstead continues to show his transformation into a physical, stretch forward off to us and I’m a big fan of his game. He’s got a big frame and is going to be the winner in almost every physical battle down low for position or rebounds. However what he’s added in recent months, a perimeter jumpshot, is key for his next level prospects. His ability to shoot off pick and pops and spot up threes is essential to be a modern big these days. He should be a dynamic force for WCDS along with

Umstead is a strong, physical paint presence out of Westchester Country Day School to keep an eye on at this year’s Top 250 Expo. He should emerge as a two-way presence in their frontcourt this season after spending the past season at T.W. Andrews High. He plays with a ton of physicality and has some versatility to his game with his ability to handle the ball and knock down shots.

Umstead is an incredibly solid post player that manned the interior well for his team this weekend. He’s got that simple, back to the basket game that makes these guys effective, and his strength and size help him do that. Simple hook shots and dropsteps are the name of his game, and when he takes space deep in the post, he does very well. He’s shown an effort to stretch the floor, but it’s still a work in progress. Defensively, he’s a mauler on the glass and someone who hits and boxes out well. He’s someone that D3 programs would love to get as a rotational big, and has room to improve as well.
