Continue ReadingSpooner was a guard that played bigger than his listed height and brought an active presence to the defensive end of the floor for his team. While only 5’11, he has long arms and quick feet that allow him to feel like he’s always in front of the opposing player, not allowing him to get much space at all. When opponents try to drive, they are met with active hands and a player who is locked in on defense, trying his best to get a stop on that posession. Should be able to break through for WC this upcoming season.
Morrison is a crafty guard that is still scratching his potential, but showed flashes over the course of Sunday. He had a variety of finishes in his locker as he attacked downhill, including a floater and some creative footwork around the basket. He played without selfishness and seeked to involve his teammates whenever he could. Defensively he could still improve in terms of his effort and attitude, but those are things that will improve and change with time, as he is young.
Dennis is a smaller guard that can handle the rock and really knows how to create his own shot. He knocked down jumpers from the outside and looked to probe and create in the mid-range all throughout the contest I got to watch. He’s skilled and a fluid ball handler, keeping it tight and maneuvering around opponents whenever he got the chance. His ability to facilitate and create for teammates is not there yet, but he definitely has a scorer’s touch.
Vaughters made the journey up from South Carolina and we were impressed with him for seeing him the first time. He really stood out getting his nose in on the boards on both ends, something guards take a long time to develop normally. He had nice touch around the basket, showcasing some floaters and acting primarily as a finesse finisher. Made the right play consistently and looked to involve his teammates. Should be able to break through this year at Aiken onto varsity.
Gatehouse brought his aggressive, physical brand of basketball back to our viewing on Sunday and we continued to be impressed. Not many guards at his age are willing to constantly attack with his intensity and IQ, as he relentlessly attacked the cup even when things weren’t going for him. However, he was still picking his spots nicely and wasn’t forcing it like some others at the camp. Hit a few jumpers which have always been a plus part of his game. Continuing to show why he should have a big year at South Meck as a sophomore.

Umstead continues to show his transformation into a physical, stretch forward off to us and I’m a big fan of his game. He’s got a big frame and is going to be the winner in almost every physical battle down low for position or rebounds. However what he’s added in recent months, a perimeter jumpshot, is key for his next level prospects. His ability to shoot off pick and pops and spot up threes is essential to be a modern big these days. He should be a dynamic force for WCDS along with MJ Edwards MJ Edwards 5’11” | PG Westchester Country Day | 2024 State NC .

Griffin Couch
Couch was a lanky, thin forward that provided an interesting complement to Umstead in the frontcourt for this team. He’s got more ball skills than many at his height, showcasing his ability to attack and handle the ball during the contest I watched. He rebounds hard, using his length and above average athleticism to pull down boards and out jump others. Could develop more of a perimeter game and become less one dimensional, but should still be an important part of his teams quest for improvement in the 1A East division.
