Akins is a point guard prospect who continues to climb up the PH NC radar out of the Charlotte area with 1 of 1 Academy. He’s a lead guard who had a strong grassroots season with 1 of 1 Elite and set to lead quite a talented cast of 1 of 1 Academy this season on the national stage. He’s a floor general to keep an eye on given his ability to operate on both ends of the floor. IUPUI, High Point and Winthrop have offered him so far as his final year of high school ball approaches.
Cole is another name at Richmond County Senior High to keep an eye on after their run in the state playoffs. He’s an unsigned senior prospect who posted 16.9 PPG, 6.4 RPG, 2.6 APG AND 2.6 SPG on 49 percent shooting from the field and 42 percent shooting from deep. He’s a crafty shooting guard who can score the ball in a variety of ways and defend at a high level with his strength and athleticism. Look for his name to grow on the recruiting trail as Elizabeth City State and Shaw have already offered him.
Patton shot up the radar after a productive grassroots campaign with Upward Stars. He’s a confident prospect who continues to improve his all-around game at 6-foot-5. He’s a versatile wing-forward set to play a big role for the Cougars in 2023-24 given his ability to defend multiple roles and the attention the new talent around him will draw on offense. He finished his junior season with 12.6 PPG, 7.2 RPG, 1.8 APG, 1.3 SPG and 1.0 BPG. Look for him to play a role in their success once again as they look to compete with crosstown rival North Mecklenburg in the Queen City Conference. Voorhees College has offered him.
Kirby is another point guard prospect in the 2024 class who’s seen his stock grow after a productive grassroots season with Warriors Life Elite . He’s a floor general prospect with a big senior season on the horizon for himself at Greenfield School. He’s shown he can control the pace and catch defenders off guard with his ability to attack the basket. As he showcases his shooting ability, look for his offer sheet to grow on the recruiting scene. Dean College has offered him.
Highlights
Alston continues to show his development at the point guard role with his ability to defend full court and make things happen off the bounce. He’s shown tremendous confidence on the perimeter over the past few months as a perimeter threat. Those skills, coupled with his ability to defend both guard roles should earn him some attention at NC Good Better Best Academy in 2023-24 since decommitting from Mount Olive. He’s drawn DII interest and has a visit setup to Winston-Salem State on Oct. 13.
Umstead is one of a few names to keep an eye on at Westchester Country Day School in the NCISAA. He’s a versatile workhorse at the forward spot who’s shown he can play with a ton of energy inside and out in many situations. He’s made a name for himself on the PH platform over the past few months with NC Spartans and as a top performer at this year’s Top 250 Expo at Cox Mill High. He’s a sizeable big man at 6-foot-6 for DII and DIII programs in need of a paint presence who continues to develop.
