Expert Analysis
Colby Giacubeno | Prep Hoops Scout
To little surprise, McDuffie was the best overall athlete on the floor. Slated to suit up with Northwestern as a freshman in the Big Ten next year, the 6-foot-3 guard touched every category on the box score and it was a good indication of how impactful he was overall. He was a menace in the passing lanes where he racked up steals and quickly generated them into fastbreak points. His ability to break his man down off the bounce and get downhill was a factor that Magruder had no answer for. If he wasn’t finishing athletically around the cup, McDuffie was making the right read as the defense collapsed as he sprayed passes out to shooters such as Hall and Finn. McDuffie’s final stat line included 21 points, eight rebounds, five steals, and three assists.

-McDuffie didn’t have his usual shooting touch from the perimeter but it didn’t matter, his two-way impact on Senior Night was palpable throughout the game. He collected steals on and off the ball to initiate the break for his team while calling his own number when he had the 1 on 1 matchup in space. The scoring versatility was on display as he knocked down a long stepback 2 in transition, had several dunks in transition off lobs and drives to the rim, ripped through to hit the extension layup, then knocked down B2B 3s to start the 2H while collecting 3 steals and two assists in the 3Q alone to break the game open. His positional size and ability to play on or off the ball as a connector for his team plays a big role in their team success.

-McDuffie struggled shooting from the floor but made sure to impact the game in other ways throughout the last matchup of the weekend. He crashed the glass at both ends of the floor and did a great job of kicking out to his shooters on the wings after grabbing offensive boards. He also answered the bell defensively by guarding 1-5 on PSB, using his length to bother shooters on the perimeter and his size to push bigs off the low block. Thought he made good decisions in transition and showed an understanding of when to bring the ball out or push for a bucket.

-Sometimes a player can be too unselfish and look to create for others when they have a better look in the paint or on the perimeter. But McDuffie found a way to leave his imprint on this game as a rebounder that was willing to mix it up with the trees or box his man out on the perimeter to collect a long rebound. Loved his activity defensively in this one as a guard that wasn’t afraid of any matchup and also noticed his vocal leadership both in between plays and during the action. He’s one of the most valuable players to his team in the area as a guard that can shoot, rebound, defend, finish above the rim, and pass.

-Wasn’t even his best game but McDuffie still finished with a double-double with rebounds as a PG and added in a combined 10 assists and steals to keep his team in the game. He’s picking his moments to score while mixing in his play-making responsibilities for a South River team that really relies on its 3-point shooting after graduating most of their frontcourt depth from last year’s AA Championship team. Best string of plays came in the 3Q as part of a SR run that brought them all the way back from 17 down to as few as 4. McDuffie got a steal and laid it in off glass after finding a teammate for a wing 3 on the previous possession, jumped to a long rebound to lay it in off the window, and stole away a rebound from an opposing big before going coast to coast for the layup in traffic at the other end. If he can mix in more paint touches to take advantage of his athleticism and break up shooting slumps to get him back into an offensive rhythm, the sky is the limit for the junior guard.

-A versatile guard that can play 1-3 both offensively and defensively, McDuffie’s outside jumper is beginning to fall (4 made 3s in one game along) and he’s cut down on some of the turnovers that he made moving through his reads too fast as a sophomore. Defensively he continues to shine as an off-ball athlete that is in the gaps defensively that will stunt and bait opponents into throwing turnovers that he can snag before heading the other way in transition. Loved that after turning it over on the first possession of the game he hustled back to block the shot, rebound the ball, and outlet to a teammate ahead of him to take advantage of a 5 on 4 break heading back to the offensive end of the floor. The handle and first step need to improve to allow him to navigate past smaller and quicker guards, but with his growing skillset and positional size– McDuffie makes for one of the more underrated prospects in the area.

Although his team struggled in this opening weekend, McDuffie played the game the right way on both ends of the floor throughout each contest. In the late Sunday slate he had a deep 3, 2 transition layups, 4 assists, 2 steal and 1 block–all in the first half. His ability to thrive on the ball as a creator and off the ball as a shooter will make him a hot commodity as he continues to go through growth spurts. Want to see him put more weight on his frame and become more assertive on the ball, with a retreat dribble before attacking the defender again after his path has been cut off the first time.
