Coming in with a target on his back as Hill’s only D1 commit and one of the top players in the state, Johnston had to work hard for his buckets but still managed his way to 21 points on the night to help engineer the comeback win. The New York native and Marquette commit was effective using his size and herky-jerky dribble-drive game to work his way to the rim off the bounce and finish effectively through contact. He was also important on the other end where he used his size and athleticism to help contend with a bigger SPIRE frontcourt. With the outcome in the balance in overtime, Johnston knocked down a 3 from the right wing that would put Hill ahead for good. It was the type of well-rounded effort that endeared the Golden Eagles staff to Johnston to begin with.

A wing sized prospect with guard skills, Johnston is a connector piece offensively who can be a play-finisher off cuts and make the right read as a passer within the flow of the offense. Defensively, Johnston can defend up and down the lineup with switch-ability and can impact the game as a help-side rim protector. This past season Johnston averaged 17 ppg., led Hill School to PAISAA state championship game and was a 1st Team All-MAPL selection. He is a “big guard” who can work as a primary ball handler, score at all three-levels, and owns all the intangibles.

While he showed flashes throughout the course of a breakout sophomore season in his first year at Hill, Johnston used his junior year to solidify himself as a high-major prospect with his athletic and cerebral two-way game. He shines using his versatility, as the New York native shows an ability to play all across the perimeter on either end with the smarts and feel to make plays consistently no matter whether the ball is in his hands. Looking a bit taller and even more twitchy athletically than in the year prior, he made perhaps his most important contributions on the defensive end, where he showed a particular knack for coming up with key plays in rotation late in games. Johnston’s ability to thrive within the flow of the game while placing an emphasis on winning and making his teammates better is a key selling point for the high-major programs now lining up for his services.

Johnston holds close to twenty offers and just added one from Maryland to his pile. Additionally, Johnston announced via social media that later this month he is taking an official visit to Marquette.

This season Johnston is stuffing the stat book for 16 points and 7 rebounds per game. He is a “big guard” who can run as a two-guard or as a primary ball handler. From either position, Johnston can drain threes and create for himself and teammates off the bounce. With his speed, athleticism, and ability to play above the rim, Johnston excels in transition. His ability grab a rebound and go coast to coast is especially impressive. Johnston plays with a level of poise that is beyond his years. College coaches recognize Johnston’s potential as he already holds twenty DI offers. The addition of a guard with Johnston’s size, versatility, agility, and long-range shooting would make for a perfect fit alongside Maxey.

Johnson showed his versatility throughout the game. He was great getting paint touches and finishing inside. He showed he could score from the three point line. He was active playing out to the mid post. Johnson scored at the foul line. Really liked his vision of the floor and making tough passes to his teammates. He added 18 points.

This season Johnston is averaging 17 ppg. and is an early favorite for the MAPL POY award. Earlier today this 3-level scoring “big guard” added an offer from Virginia Tech to his list.  Johnston already holds over a dozen offer and recently announced that he will be taking an official visit to Marquette in late February.
