Expert Analysis
Ryan Morgan | Prep Hoops Scout
The senior Curtis guard can score the rock, using midrange step-backs to create space, spotting up from 3Pt, and finding lanes to attack the hoop. And while his offense will be key to helping Curtis win the three games they need to advance to State, his opportunistic defense has also been a big factor recently. In a big league game against Sumner earlier in January Whitten racked up the steals, ending with at least four on the night, most of which led to fast break buckets. He’ll be a guy they look at to set the tone and hit the big shots as they tight rope through Districts to head back to the T-Dome.

I would say Devin is an essential part to this Curtis team, but they are filled with talent. He will be able to display more of his talents on the court during the AAU season with TeamStuck. That is mostly because he will have the ball in his hands more as a ball handler, but will still be a lockdown spot up shooter still.

The most likely of the handful of other talented players to step up on the offensive end. These three guards are one of the best trios with Whiten being a three point threat as well. He is an excellent defensive player who might be posed with the task of slowing down

This one might come as a surprise. Whitten is already a top 15 player in his class, so how much further can he really rise? Whitten often finds himself matched up with the opponent’s best backcourt player, taking on a huge defensive responsibility for a team that relies on defensive astuteness. He’s also a big floor spacer for the Vikings who have a number of players who like to slash inside and make plays in the paint. So how does Whitten get better? Next year, Curtis loses four of their top six players (not including Whitten), and a huge chunk of scoring and playmaking. I can see him making big strides in his senior year lined up next to Diallo in Curtis’s backcourt and taking on more scoring and playmaking duties. He’s already a strong guard but adding more strength in the offseason could help him improve his interior finishing and flesh out his potential as a scorer. Keep tabs on him the rest of this season; there will be plenty of big moments to be had for the Vikings as they defend their state title.

The talent Devin has on the court is undeniable. He is a top player within the class and that won’t change. The one thing in my eyes that holds him back just a little is how deep this Curtis HS team really is. They could easily be one of the deepest teams within the entire state. Despite having a plethora of guards, Whitten’s talents are on display nightly. Whitten is an excellent deep shooter, knocking down the three from anywhere. One thing that stands out to me as well is his quick hands on defense, as well as his ability to finish through traffic and attacking the rim no matter who is in front of him.
