About Carlton
Expert Analysis
Sam Duren | Prep Hoops Scout
Summers is becoming quite the flame thrower from distance. It looks like last weekend in Tulsa that he was draining threes like they were layups. Good off the ball movement and footwork to come off screens, drift to his spots and always be ready to shoot. Still has hints of his iso game off the dribble, with good mid-range attacks. Becoming clear he could continue to develop into one of the better shooters in Oklahoma’s Class of 2027

Summers is usually recognized for scoring abilities. Those aspects of his game were still strong at the Expo, but the signs of him spending time in the gym have led to growth in other areas. In the past he was an iso player, with seemingly only one mission. Get buckets. That focus made it look like he would have tunnel vision focus on the rim.
While not a true point guard yet, there were very good moments of quickly processing and slipping passes to teammates on drives and in transition. Summers continuing to read and process the game better will not only make him a more efficient scorer, it will help elevate his team as well. Making him more endearing to collegiate programs.

Summers has always been a bucket getter, who has thrived in iso situations. But these recent clips from the UA Rise circuit show him playing more out of ball screens, And even making good passes instead of forcing shots in the crowd. It’s a key step forward in his game, because while skilled there have been times that he’s too fallen in love with his handles. As he continues to play against higher level competition, finding the right balance between scoring and helping to elevate his teammates will be key. And for now, good luck stopping his mid-range game. Which he has a variety of moves to get his shot off.

When Summers checks into the game, instant offense often follows. That was the case of a second half. With the Runners trailing, he changed the game as his iso based game proved to be too much for the opposition. He’s a confident shooter off the dribble, with the ability to create openings in the mid-range and from three. He is also a skilled and smart finisher around the rim, who is starting to have more lift on those finishes. Along with Summers, his Norman North teammates Cooper-Kelley and Gregory were pivotal in the win for the Runners.

Summers is becoming instant offense for the Timberwolves off the bench. It was her perimeter shooting, off the dribble and spot up, that sparked a fourth quarter run which gave them a chance to win it late. He’s a shot hunter, who can pressure the rim with good pace or perhaps more importantly quickly pull up off the dribble in the mid-range and from deep. Has the makings to continue to mature into one of the better scorers in Oklahoma’s Class of 2027. But right now, is perfect in a microwave role off the bench. And he’s often trust to closes games because of his growing clutch genes. Just see the game winner he hit earlier this month against top 6A squad, Deer Creek.

Carlton Summers lived up to his high ranking by being one of the best driving guards at The Expo. While attacking the rim, Summers excelled by gathering before elevating off two feet. He had great control while in the air and finished with good touch. His ability to knock down threes after creating separation also caught eyes whether they came from pull-ups or stepback looks.

Productive freshman year at the small school ranks, showing a great foundation as a score first point guard. Is now making the big jump to the 6A level with Norman North, which should see his scoring mentality be merged with a more complete offensive skillset. Which will involve him better picking his spots to score and playing the role of a distributor. Development in those areas will increase his immediate impact and help him reach his long term potential.

The small town guard is one of the members of a promising Class of 2027 in Oklahoma that is starting to make waves. He’s a well drilled freshman with a good handle, who leaned on spin moves and eurosteps to navigate through traffic. Summers looked comfortable and fluid stepping into his shots off the dribble from distance as well. He has a good foundation and will be interesting to watch as he grows.
