Sticking with names to know in South Carolina’s 2027 class, Vandergift Jr. was one who really stood out to me on Saturday. He’s due for a big boost in the next rankings update because of how crucial a piece he has proven to be for Upward Stars Columbia 17U. He simply is a positive whenever he’s on the floor because of his desire to defend, rebound on both ends of the floor, make the right pass, and play through contact. Adam will rarely be the leading scorer for his team, but he helps win games without doing so, and I have no doubts that he could do the same thing at a D3 or NAIA program down the line.

Another Chapin Eagle who caught my eye in Batesburg-Leesville is Vandergrift Jr. He is exactly the type of hustling wing that every good team needs at this level. Adam is slightly undersized for his position, but they will use him to his strengths in full-court pressure, as an offensive rebounder, and a driver with two to three dribbles. His shooting will be an indicator of how good a prospect he can be, but there’s no doubt that Vandergrift is a crucial piece for this Chapin team.

Based on what I saw from Adam in June with PCH, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him in the rotation for Chapin this season. He is an impactful defender who brings the intensity each and every possession – something teams of all levels need.

This is a new name to the database, but one who will see good minutes for Chapin if he continues to play hard on the defensive end of the floor. Adam had a remarkable-6 steal game in the close win over NC Invasion. He did so in multiple ways, including jumped passing lanes, deflected inbound passes, and strip steals. Vandergrift is also a weapon on the defensive glass, particularly because of his strong boxouts. On offense, Adam has a nice mid-range game and will hit threes if left open.
