Now 6-7, the floor general is blessed with the length, strength, lateral quickness and IQ to guard all five positions on the floor – many times in the same game – a security blanket on defense that is every coach’s dream.
For those reasons, Howell is the Full-Time Hoops Defensive Player of the Year.
Here is the rest of the First team.
All Defensive First Team
Alex Wade, 5-11 2021 PG, Cathedral Catholic
Catalyst of Cathedral’s suffocating matchup zone, Wade frustrated lead guards into turnovers and off shooting nights. Wade has active hands and anticipates drives well, which allows him to get on-ball steals as well as shoot passing gaps effectively.
Keavie Love, 6-3 2021 G, El Camino
One of the region’s more versatile defenders, Love was called on to shut down backcourt and frontcourt players, and did so regularly. A perfect example of this was in the CIF Playoffs, where he effectively neutralized Westview’s 6-10 center Max Lonneker.
Derrien Carter-Hollinger, 6-5 2021 W, Foothills Christian
A gifted defender who was the glue of Foothills defensive efforts. Much like his cohorts on the first team, versatility is his calling card. He is long enough to guard post players and protects the rim as a weakside defender. On the ball, he really gets after it, sits in a stance and slides his feet impressively.
Obinna Anyanwu, 6-8 2021 F, Cathedral Catholic
An imposing force on the defensive end, Anyanwu’s position defense and rim protection helped to propel the Dons to the CIF Open Division title. A monster on the boards, there weren’t many players who elevate to grab missed shots at their peak like him.
