Sheldon’s Marcus Bagley, Mayfair’s Josh Christopher, Foothills Christian’s Yassine Gharram, Lynwood’s Jaren Johnson, St. Bernard’s Nick Bowden and Bosco’s Wynton Brown made up some of the top seniors in attendance, but in this piece we shine the light on the under-the-radar seniors who turned in strong efforts.
Dion Porter, Los Altos
Porter is a long, wiry and bouncy athlete, and at 6-feet-4, showed the ability to guard multiple positions with success. Porter scored all 10 of his points in the first half to help the Los Altos get out to a quick and large lead and played limited minutes for the remainder of the game. One of the more underrated parts of Porter’s game is his rebounding ability for his size and position.
D’Anthony Ward, Washington Prep
Ward is a small but crafty point guard who plays with good pace. The 5-foot-8 senior uses changes of speed to get where he needs to go in transition, is a consistent perimeter jump shooter when on the move and finishes around the basket much bigger than his size. What stands out most about Ward is that his teammates look to him for leadership when the game is on the line and he delivers more often than not.
Xavier Brown, Sheldon
We like Brown as a glue guy because he does a little bit of everything throughout the course of a game. The 6-foot-4 wing is an inside out scoring threat as he can hit the open catch-and-shoot perimeter jumper and use his strong frame to bully defenders in the paint and finish around the basket. Brown scored 12 points, with two 3-pointers, in Sheldon’s blowout win over Mayfair.
Dontrell Hewlett, Sheldon
Hewlett is a rangy 6-foot-3 off-guard who is most effective slashing his way to the basket in both transition and half-court settings. He’s a capable floor spreader with his feet set and time and space behind-the-arc. Hewlett showed defensive prowess when spending time guarding highly-regarded Mayfair senior Josh Christopher and versatility with his ability to switch onto any position in ball-screen action.
Jalai O’Keith, Foothills Christian
If there’s one thing we can say about O’Keith it’s that he produces in every game we’ve seen him play. The 6-foot-5 wing scored 13 points in Foothills’ loss to St. Bernard, and while his game isn’t super flashy, O’Keith is a reliable perimeter shooter, defender, and rebounder who has been and will continue to be one of the Knights’ most important players, especially as the postseason nears.
