The first round will be spread out over Wednesday and Thursday – here’s a quick look at the games on Wednesday and the players to watch out for.
4:00 pm – Parkrose vs. Tigard
Drew CarterAfter contemplating a couple of off-season transfers, Damontae “Tay Tay” Burns (2021) has stuck around at Parkrose and will head the Bronco attack. Tigard will be led by football quarterback Drew Carter (2021) who is an outstanding basketball prospect in his own right, having also earned a hoops scholarship offer from Portland State. Steven Long (2020) is a high-academic senior D-III schools are tracking, Brett Moss (2021) is another junior starting to assert himself, and twins Malik and Kalim Brown (both 2023) have been impact freshmen.
5:30 pm – Silverton vs. Sherwood
David GonzalesOn paper, this could be the most competitive matchup of the first round. 5A Silverton has quite a few guys back from its state tournament team, most notably seniors David Gonzales (2020) and Grant Dunn (2020). Dunn has already signed with Multnomah while Gonzales continues to hear from schools at a number of different levels. Sherwood is also paced by a couple of seniors in point guard Jamison Guerra (2020) and Blake Jensen (2020). Both have already secured their college futures having signed with OIT. Asher Krauel (2012) is an emerging junior to watch as well.
7:00 pm – Central vs. Wilsonville
Keegan ShiversWilsonville has traditionally had success in this tournament and it would be surprising if they didn’t again this year. The reason why is they are headed by a the senior trio of Dakota Reber (2020), Gabe Reichle (2020), and Keegan Shivers (2020). All three have college offers from various levels and all three are playing out their senior seasons before making any decisions. Central is young but has some promising prospects, notably post Brooks Ferguson (2022). The sophomore had a chance to participate in elite camp at Western Oregon this summer and made an impression.
8:30 pm – Corvallis vs. West Salem
Justin ScogginThis 5A/6A battle should feature some differing styles. Corvallis will try to utilize their height advantage inside as senior Jasper Reinalda (2020) will tower over everyone else at 7-foot-3. The high-academic big man continues to improve with his overall skills on a daily basis. West Salem will counter with a more perimeter-oriented attack with Justin Scoggin (2020) at the helm. The high-scoring combo guard has started off the season leading 6A in scoring and most recently exploded for a 36-point game. Holden Whipple (2021) is another Titan worth watching.
