I made the stop for a seven-game schedule where there were teams from all across the state going head to head on the 3-court CPS Sportsplex facility.
Here is a look at the second part of the top standouts list.
ICYMI: Part 1
Fabio Basili (Oak Ridge)
Transferring over from Lake Howell (7.5 PPG, 30-point high outing against West Port), 2022 6’3″ guard Fabio Basili has made an instant impact for his new squad. On Oak Ridge, he started all three games on Saturday alongside 2022 forward Lewis Jones and 2021 trio Michael James, Jalen Smith and Roddrick Henry. Basili has huge upside already with his seasoned handles, good court awareness and feel for the floor. He had a sequence against Trinity Catholic with a steal and a dunk in transition (video at the bottom of the story). Look for Basili to really mature on this athletic and young group.
Ernest Udeh (Dr. Phillips)
Dr. Phillips has a lot of athletes on its side and 2022 6’8″ Ernest Udeh is one of them that is going to be really good in due time. Already a good post presence, he was routinely backing down players and taking on challenges. Room to add muscle, Udeh is certainly someone who will get better as he gets in the gym more and is a prospect to monitor closely.
Marquise Rue (Winter Haven)
Throwing down a monster slam on a defender against Oak Ridge, 2021 6’5″ forward Marquise Rue instantly made the gym rise. Making his way up from JV late last season, it is quite clear that he’s ready for the task at hand on the varsity level. Rue is part of a long and young Winter Haven group that could be very good here soon. 2023 pair Ty Williams and Rojiah Hardy are two rising freshmen to watch develop as well.
Jarveil Gainey (Trinity Catholic)
2021 6’1″ guard Jarveil Gainey continues to be a reliable mid-range shooter for Trinity Catholic. His mature jumper, smart shot selection and willingness to attack against bigger defenders is fun to watch. Gainey will have to do a lot this season for a new look squad, but regardless of what their record is, he will gain invaluable experience as a vocal leader. He currently has offers from UNF, Southeastern Louisiana and Bethune Cookman.
Derrick Lovett (Blanche Ely)
Blanche Ely has seven players right now, but wait until the fall and this group will look a whole lot different. Regardless, the Tigers are tough, athletic and never quit. 2022 6’4″ forward Derrick Lovett is a prospect earning a lot of playing time and he shined against Seffner Christian offensively. He has very long arms and a good frame. Lovett is a crafty finisher and one that is stronger than he looks. Looking to defend its state title, Lovett’s progress will go a long way in Blanche Ely’s cause.
Donovan Draper & Jonathan Mogbo (Forest Hill)
This has been a highly successful month for Forest Hill. A playoff team often the past few years, the Falcons have two very lengthy athletes in 2021 6’5″ forward Donovan Draper and 2020 6’5″ forward Jonathan Mogbo. The duo can both push the tempo with their ballhandling skills and the versatility and willingness to attack is a joy to watch. Draper can punch a dunk when coming down the lane while Mogbo is more of a strong finisher.
