College Commitment: Brock Henry (2019 Southridge HS)
Originally, the trip was supposed to take place in February. Unfortunately weather got in the way of Brock Henry making a visit to Lewis-Clark State in Idaho and things were tabled until later. Fast forward a couple of months and the schedule opened up for the athletic 6-foot-4 combo guard to make a trip to see the campus in Lewiston and not long after he returned, Henry made the call to commit to be a Warrior.
“I went on a visit there this week Monday through Wednesday and I got a chance to talk things over with my family and my high school coach Phil Vesel and decided that it checked all the boxes,” Henry said. “It’s a great program and they’ve got a really great culture going on over there, so we decided it would be the best place for me to continue playing and continue my education.”
Lewis-Clark State had offered Henry a scholarship during the season and he had been in touch with the coaching staff for quite some time. But it was the trip that sealed the deal as Henry was able to truly get a feel for what the Warriors program was all about.
“I got to go on campus and played in open gym with their guys and it’s just a really good culture,” Henry said. “It’s a really tight knit group of guys and it’s a really good team and the coaches are great. I just love the program – it’s one I want to play for and one that would have my best interests at heart.”
A high-academic student, academics are also very important to Henry and Lewis-Clark State fit the bill in that aspect as well. “We also got a chance to talk to one of the biology professors – right now I’m looking at majoring in biology,” Henry said. “We talked about the timeline for graduating and what that would look like and they checked all the boxes. There are a great set of professors there that I’d be happy to learn under.”
With his decision done, Henry – who noted that he and fellow Lewis-Clark signee Oreon Courtney of West Linn may be roommates in college – is now ready to get to work. While he’ll no longer be playing with Oregon Basketball Club on the AAU circuit, Henry knows that there are things with his game and body that will need to improve as he joins a team that made the NAIA Final Four last year.
“I want to keep working on my ball-handling and getting a consistent shot,” Henry said. “And of course, I need to work on getting my body ready for the physicality of playing at the college level.”
Henry currently ranks as the #14 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2019 rankings.
