The athletic 6-foot-4 combo guard is staying positive despite some of the lumps Southridge has taken along the way, and it’s paid off in one way as he has earned his first scholarship offer.
“It’s been full of ups and downs and honestly it’s been a one-of-a-kind season in maybe not the best way or the way that we expected,” Henry said. “But it’s been fun and it’s a great life lesson in how to deal with adversity, whether it be losses of games or even of teammates. It’s been a tough season but it’s been fun and it’s still been memorable.”
Henry has typically been the team’s top scorer every night out despite the fact he’s been the main target of opposing defenses. Always known as a great shooter with the athleticism to take it to the basket and finish at the rim, the increased attention defensively has forced him to adjust his game – but in a good way.
“For sure my pull-up game, my mid-range has gotten really good and that’s something that has really helped me this season,” Henry said. “Guys have been up and in on me so they’re taking away the three and a lot of guys are expecting me to drive once they’re up in me, so if I get that quick stop pull-up – it’s been there almost the whole season. It was something I was looking to work on over the summer and obviously it’s paying off.”
The improvements Henry has made to his play have obviously paid off in his college recruitment. While he notes that programs such as Lewis & Clark and Central Washington remain in contact, one school has taken things to the next level with him. NAIA program Lewis-Clark State has offered him a scholarship – Henry’s first – and weather permitting, he’s hoping to take a visit to their campus in Lewiston, Idaho this weekend.
“That’s the school that’s been showing me the most interest so I’d like to get up there and visit with them,” Henry said. “I’ve built a really good relationship with Coach (Austin) Johnson up there so we’ll see how things shake out. I’m keeping my options open – I’m not one of those guys that is locked into going D-I, so I’ll take what I can get.”
As Henry sorts through his recruitment, he’s trying his best to keep Southridge in the post-season chase. On Tuesday night, the Skyhawks dropped a tough game on the road to Westview but there’s nothing to do for Southridge to move on to the next game. “We really bounced back after that Beaverton loss and we fought hard against Jesuit,” Henry said. “Against a lot of teams that effort and execution that we showed out there would have beaten a lot of teams. But we’ve got to bounce back – we’re kind of in a rut right now but I think we’ll get out of it eventually and we’ll come back a better team.”
Henry currently ranks as the #14 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2019 rankings.
