For those of you who do not know or have heard of the National Hoopfest, it is basically a showcased event that has four different locations and is one of the best event in boys high school hoops. The four locations this year have been Washington D.C, Dallas, Memphis, and the last one being in Tampa Bay in February. Georgia has represented in two of the events with Holy Spirit Prep and Meadowcreek. This past weekend both programs represented the peach state in Memphis and finished with a combined 1-3 record.
Holy Spirit Prep made their second trip to compete in the National Hoopfest after already participating in the Washington D.C event back in December. The Cougars this season have been led by 2019 SG Anthony Edwards, who has been one the most exciting prospects to watch. Unfortunately for Holy Spirit Prep, the results they wanted coming out of Memphis did not happen after going winless. They took defeats from Memphis East (TN) and Briarcrest Christian (TN) in their two days.
The first night the Cougars were up against Memphis East (TN), a program with the nations top senior Memphis signee C James Wiseman. His matchup with Anthony “Ant-Man” Edwards drew a huge crowd Friday night and Edwards finished with a solid 25 points on the game in their 70-57 lost. Holy Spirit Prep battled Briarcrest Christian (TN) pretty well on their second day in the National Hoopfest. It was a back and forth affair but Briarcrest pulled out the victory winning 59-58. Edwards finished with 24 points and 7 rebounds in that matchup. It has not been the ideal start Coach Anderson and his staff wanted this year in his first season but Cougars are still one of the best teams to watch in Georgia.
As for Meadowcreek, Georgia’s class 7A defending champions, the Mustangs split their Tennessee trip going 1-1 overall. The Mustangs took a lost on the first night losing to Barlett (TN) 62-50 and where Temple signee 2019 SG Damian Dunn led the team finishing with 18 points. The second night was different for the Mustangs as they took down one of Tennessee’s best programs in Brentwood Academy (TN) 46-43. UAB signee 2019 PG Jalen Benjamin led with 18 points. Coach G and his staff have been battle tested all season long and will look to repeat as champions this season when it is all said and done.
