Recruiting Report: Gyasi Powell (2020)
2020 guard Gyasi Powell has emerged for Bishop Snyder.
The 6’2″, 180-pounder called his junior season a true learning experience. He transferred over last summer from Sandalwood.
“My confidence level was low at the beginning the season. As the season went on my confidence level got higher and it started showing. I was going from not helping my team on the floor to scoring and making plays for the team. We had a 16-10 regular season record at the end of the season but we ended on a nine-game winning streak going into the playoffs,” Powell told Prep Hoops. “The playoff game before states, we played PK Younge. We were prepared going into that game but we didn’t pull out the win and that hurt because that was what we were working for.”
He says going into this season, his team has gotten way better coming off a strong spring and summer.
“I got more confident over the summer because I had to do a lot for my team for us to win,” Powell said. “This season I am excited to be a big role in our team and to help lead my team to a state championship.”
Over the summer, Powell suited up for Q6 All-Stars.
“It was good for me because I got to play in some exposure tournaments and some really big tournaments. It was my first time playing with this team and coaches,” Powell said. “Throughout AAU we played good teams with ranked players and with coaches watching I played good. I got some interest throughout the summer.”
The interest that he currently has is from Lafayette, FAMU, Columbia and Rice.
In terms of his biggest strengths, Powell pointed to his shooting, vocalness and ballhandling. He says he wants to improve his leading by example and ability to take pride in defending opponents.
Bishop Snyder has emerged over these past few seasons as a dangerous Class 4A team. With 2020 forward Corey Walker Jr. (No. 3 ranked prospect by Prep Hoops Florida), 2019 guard Jalen Nesmith and 2021 guards Justin Hicks and Austin Lewis, Powell has a lot to lean on and learn from in his junior campaign. He’s a player to monitor moving forward.
